Don Cherry had some classic, out of touch, get off my lawn comments about Carolina last night.

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/ron-don-hurricanes-celebrations-absolutely-ridiculous/

He almost immediately started getting trolled by the Carolina Hurricanes twitter account. Check out their new Personal Info under their handle, and their pinned tweet. Whoever is running the teams social media deserves a raise.

And they are already running with the branding:

I guess, in the end, Carolina does owe Don Cherry a debt of gratitude. Because if it weren't for his ignorant comments the Hurricanes wouldn't have this great opportunity to earn more revenue, and become a bigger part of the hockey conversation, despite being a borderline playoff team.

I was watching this last night with some friends. And I usually enjoy Don and Coach's Corner and I guess I wouldn't yell back at the TV if it was another team and I was alone LOL

Like my friend said - that's the generational/millennial gap. I am closer to Don's age than I am to a lot of the players

I like what they do. If it puts butts in the seats and the team stays in Raleigh that's good.

Of course they do it after the other team left and only at home so is it really disrespectful?

As long as they do it that means we are winning.

Look forward to more cellys

Yep, I been watching yhe trolling and loving every minute of it!! Don is never shy of speaking his mind, nice that the Hurricane’s organization isnt being politically correct...VERY fun to watch!! I hope the Canes can keep winning just so we can drag this on. Haha

Don is so very out of touch with today’s game. He understands talent, but not what motivates or entertains. I hope the Canes continue to show their personality.

Many out there think Cherry is bang on with his assessment. These ridiculous celebrations make the game look like a circus or carnival show instead of a professional hockey game. There's an element of honor to this game and this kind of thing takes away from that. Win over fans with the on ice product during the game and they wont have to pull this kind of "dog and pony show" act to sell tickets.

Remember how much hate Ovechkin got for his celebrations early in his career? I find that attitude similar to how in baseball, it's disrespectful to show that you have any enjoyment playing the game. However, being miserable all the time is called being "a professional" lol

I agree. It's a game; it's supposed to be fun. And I enjoy it more when I see the people playing it enjoying themselves.

I don't care if it's hockey, baseball, basketball or football. If you're an athlete and you don't like someone else's celebration. It's easy, beat them.

Here's the question:

Do the Hurricanes fans like it?

Sure seems like they do. If so, then it's great. Isn't the objective to win, entertain, and put fans in the seats?

I love it, let the guys have some fun.

Meh, who cares really. I enjoy Cherry, I certainly don't live my life by his preaching's but I do love his loyalty and passion for hockey and it's roots. I also love his respect for our service people (military, fire, police etc). I do find he is a little out of touch with younger more sensitive viewers but everyone still tunes in. Good on the Canes if it helps them market the team. Is a post game 1 minute celebration really but butts in seats, I doubt it.

Don Cherry needed to get the Ol Yeller treatment about 20-25 years ago. For someone to say it's an embarrassment wearing the Look At Me suits he wears every time he's on might want to look in the mirror at what an embarrassment truly is. Especially when the Captain is a "Good Canadian Boy" and a consummate professional like Justin Williams is.

What's sadder is to see as a minor hockey coach is other coaches who believe Cherry is the role model to show young kids how to play hockey today - and I've seen it first hand as a coach.

I personally have no issues with what they do. I love Justin Williams, especially when he was with Washington. He just gets it. They are grown men who get payed very well to play a game for a living. It's supposed to be fun and entertaining. They aren't doing it while the team is still on the ice, or when they lose. They wait until the other team leaves and they entertain the fans with the fun and joy that a win brings.

The old guard is just that, old. The league is only getting younger.

The Canes can do whatever they want and he should have kept his opinion to himself on that one. I am just glad that my team does the traditional stick salute.

I have witnessed a handful of these this year in person. They are a ton of fun and the crowd really gets into it. I seriously doubt people are buying tickets just to see the 90-seconds of joy, but it sure keeps people from rushing out a minute before the horn blows.

I think it's refreshing to see. Obviously, it's a great marketing move. In terms of generating some excitement after a win at home it scores again and again. Haters gonna hate and they're helping the cause here by going viral. This is a new age and word gets out quick especially if they be mostly sour grapes. I hope the Canes sell a million t shirts while continuing to promote fun and excitement for the game we love.

Canes STM here. As others have said, it’s done by the players (Williams’s concept) to further interact with and entertain the fans after wins. The fans here love it and always stay in the seats after games end now. The players obviously enjoy it. The other team is off the ice, so I don’t get the disrespect card. Not everyone will like it, and that’s ok.any media saying they don’t like it...is fine, completely their right. To criticize the team for doing it cause they are jerks (Cherry) or for not spending that 1 minute prepping or training further (jtbourne from the Athletic) is ridiculous in my eyes. They team is having fun and further connecting with the local fans who have gone through an extended postseason drought.

My 2 cents
Daniel
