Hey everyone;

Another month has come and (almost) gone, so with that, it's time to reflect on the pickups that February has brought me. At times, they started to bunch together and looked like they would come fast and furious to the point that I might easily exceed my 10 pickups from January. Alas, it was not to be. The well ran dry for the last 10 days and left me at a standstill. My wallet said thank you, and without further ado, here's what I have to show for it:

94/95 Topps Premier #10 Larry Murphy Autograph by primetimepawich, on Flickr

A few weeks prior, I kept tabs on this card when it was listed on Ebay in a lot with some other IP signed Penguins cards. As seen with the Capitals Pizza Hut team issue last month, I'm not above buying a lot of multiple cards for the sole purpose of getting just one of the cards...if it's a fair assumption I can move the others and recoup most of my cost. With these ones, I just didn't know. In the end, I decided I couldn't justify spending the extra money and just hoped whoever did might list them separately in future. That's exactly what happened. Our own Harris Sports Cards ended up being the winner and promptly tried to flip them separately. After a quick back-and-forth, I won this card for a minimal cost. Thanks!

I'm still trying for the rainbow of these ITGU Triple Game Used patches, but finding them for sale now (at a reasonable price) can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. I saw this one listed at auction with a realistic starting price and wanted to take a chance. Only problem? It was based in the States and had Global Shipping. So I gave a hot tag to my trusty shipping friend Kevin Mitchell, and he hooked me up again. Thanks Kevin!

I'd seen both of the limited numbered versions of this card when Trilogy was released, but not the unnumbered version which I had assumed to be more plentiful and accessible. I was starting to wonder if this version even existed. Eventually, a post and picture from our own ronfir confirmed that it did. When this one popped up on Ebay with a low starting bid, I took a run at it and won.

This card had previously been listed on Ebay, only for me to be outbid at the last minute. Imagine my surprise when it later reemerged from the same seller with the same original starting price. Did somebody actually welch on such a reasonably inexpensive card? Whatever. I resubmitted my original bid and won it for the slightly cheaper starting price. Second time's a charm.

Another card I badly want to complete the rainbow of. Despite being out since November, there aren't a lot of these floating out there. There's a few in circulation with varying quality and prices, but I've got my eye on a few of them, including one from our own capsfan CJ that I believe will be mine someday. Until then though, this will have to do as a start. The BIN/OBO price was such that I felt I could stomach it if they cut it in half. The problem again was that the seller wasn't inclined to ship it to Canada. However, they had free shipping to the States, so...cue Kevin Mitchell. He worked his magic and I was able to lock it down. Probably my best Wings patch so far and I'm thrilled to get it.

And for my best card of February...

This was again proof that "everything comes around again". I'd seen this in a break post a couple years ago on blowoutcards and was immediately intrigued (again, another future rainbow I'd low-key like to achieve someday) but as luck would have it, it was of course pulled by a big Penguins fan who was equally thrilled to have it. It wasn't going anywhere soon, so I saved the scan in my "population report", put it out of mind and moved on.

So imagine my surprise when early this month, I saw it rear its head on Ebay in a standard auction with a low starting bid. I had to take a run at it, but with the expensive shipping from the US and my own aversion to sniping programs due to past glitches costing me cards, who did I call on? You guessed it.

It was a 10-day listing with countless watchers, so I was nervous for all 10 of those days and feared a bidding war. I gave Kevin a maximum price to snipe, but with all the eyes on it, I later second-guessed myself and upped that price by another $10. Even that didn't guarantee anything, but if I still lost, I could at least know I'd tried.

Turns out that extra $10 was the right call. The bidding actually got up to my original max, so a late snipe at that same price would've only tied and lost out to the original bid. An extra dollar was all the difference in the world.

Oh yeah, I promised a non-Murphy bonus, didn't I?

Lost in the hoopla of my Murphy collection, you probably don't know I'm a Montreal Canadiens fan at heart. Some years, it's frankly quite hard to be, but as long as the team tries, I try. Will they ever get back to the promised land again in my lifetime? Who knows, but suffice to say, 92/93 was a good year for this young teenager. With their miraculous overtime run, I knew even then I was witnessing something special. Patrick Roy (jerk that he is) was my guy, but I had a strong appreciation for the other players who contributed along the way. Chief among those was Kirk Muller. He may not have worn the C at the time, but he put up good numbers and could always be counted on to play like a captain in the clutch in my eyes.

Like many of you, I'm in awe of the Jumbo One-Timer patch cards that Leaf consistently rolls out, but my eyes are on the prize with my Murphy PC and I can't and don't let myself get sidetracked with unrelated impulse buys. I simply can't afford to. But...sometimes exceptions must be made.

Ever had that happen, where a card just speaks to you? It happened to me. I thought I could safely put this card on my Watch List and be satisfied to just view it from afar, but I fell in love with it and decided if the seller would accept an offer at a certain price point, I would get it. They did, and I did.

Rarely does a card capture such a patch of the CH logo, and even more rarely does it do so on a card of a player who wasn't flashy but did right by that logo. I give you...Captain Kirk:

Thanks as always for the look.

The main PC additions are nice and all but wow that Muller is unreal!

Served him breakfast in the McDonalds drive-thru in Napanee one time, lol

Love reading the stories. Great pickups!
I had a captain Kirk poster in my room with him floating in space

That Muller is sweet no doubt, but seeing your Murphy pcikups every month are a really nice site to see. So many low-numbered pickups, you gotta be happy about that!

My favourite is The Sensational Swatch Red /5! What a nice card that is.

Way to go! :)

Joe ...buddy that all time lumber team of the penguins is a BEAUTY ....I realllllly like that card ...thanks for sharing

Pretty Stellar pick ups Joe!! loving the Muller! Pleasure to seeing it you received!

Can't wait until your next post of Murphy's!

Great pickups as always Joe! I still have that Murph set aside for you ;)

That Muller, though...dang. That's a beaut. Congrats.

Thanks CJ, I'm gonna hold you to that :)

Awesome cards joe! Absolutely love that Muller Patch. What a beautiful piece

Thanks Derek, I especially appreciate it coming from a Leaf fan - that must have been hard for you to admit eh? :)

Wow, the Muller is a beauty!

Thank you, any nice Mullers in your own PC?

Thanks Scott; I hope he ate for free :) His money would certainly be no good if I was working the till.

And I was most definitely referring to Roy's off ice antics. The wink? The Stanley Cup rings blocking his ears from Jeremy Roenick's comments? Loved it all. The guy was an arrogant rockstar but damned if he didn't back it up more often than not.

Thanks, it was definitely a marketable nickname and gimmick for him to have while he was the captain there, wasn't it?

Thanks Aaron. You're right - the Muller may have been "Best in Show" this time but the Murphy PC is still where my bread is buttered and I'm fortunate to have some nice ones to show from February. Low-numbered or not, it all comes down to if I can make them fit my budget.

Thanks Nick. I know it may not be as colorful overall as some other cards like the President's Choice 9-player Dynasty Stickracks as an example, but the Murphy stick piece was a nice multicolor that drew me to it. And for my collecting purposes, the quality of his GU pieces is the main thing that matters.

Lots of sweet Murphy cards to see, but that Captain Kirk card is out of this world! Congrats on the pickups Joe.

Nice Muller! Great Murphy pickups as usual too!

Great pickups as always! That Muller is certainly a beauty!

Great Muller!

Nice pickups! Great piece on the sensational patch!

Thanks guys, appreciate the Murphy/Muller love

Love those "One-Timer" patch cards!!!

I have a few of them.
