Per Darren Rovell via Twitter:

FBI officials were at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago this weekend, issuing subpoenas related to card doctoring scandal. Subpoenas mentioned PWCC and its founder Brent Huigens and any information related to his or the company’s submissions to graders.

Let's see what happens next.

If it's true, Good for them. It is guys like this that taints the spirit of the hobby. I hope he and anyone related to this get what they deserve. I feel bad for anyone that has bought from this company. In my mind any cards from there could be tainted.

Very interesting...that would have been cool to see all those FBI jackets swarming the pavilion...lol
Keep in mind subpoenas and indictments are two completely different things, so I am going to refrain from judging PWCC further without more facts arising on the scandal.

Weeeee! That's an extremely interesting development. Sad that it seems more often than not whoever rises to the top of their respective industries tend to be involved in something shady. If the allegations are true, take 'em down!

Can someone explain to me what PWCC's role is in this? I suspect they may have known they accepted trimmed cards but everything I read simply implies they were the ones being used to sell them.

Isn't the bigger culprit in all of this the Moser guy who trimmed the cards, PSA for grading trimmed and BGS for dishing out perfect 10s to specific sellers?

PWCC owner supposedly bought cards using his personnal eBay account and gave them to Moser. They were trimmed, graded and sold thru PWCC. Basically he was profiting from the scam.

That's not quite how I read it. I dont believe PWCC was served. It's says the subpoenas mention PWCC and Brent. Brent and PWCC are cooperating with the FBI according to his attorney that posts on Net 54. I wouldn't think the FBI would issue a subpoena to a cooperating witness. Apparently someone on BO even turned in a card o an FBI agent at the PWCC booth.

These practices won't change with PWCC going out of business. Its the backbone of BGS and PSA's business. As long as high dollar collectors are ok with "conserving" card, ie defrauding other collectors, then this will continue.

This is huge.

I was tempted to buy a high end Gretzky rc but I can't trust any graded card out there.

It's really hard to find positivity in this hobby as it stands today

This is where I am at. This event has made it clear that the card doctors can colour, trim, repair cards that can’t be detected by the TPG’s. Rough cuts? No problem. Filling in snow or missing colour? No issue at all.

I think the explosion in high grade the past 5 years has a whole lot to do with large dealers building these cards.

I collect 74 opc, some of the cards are impossible to find even 80/20 and a guy that has sheets for sale of the same set has 50/50 PSA 10 examples. Some of these cards just never came from the factory mint.

And some of these crooked dealers have been submitting for over a decade, thousands of cards a year. If you look at some of the subs these guys are hitting 50s and 60s cards in high grade by the hundreds. Impossible that there are that many available, these are being built.

Oh well I will just pick away at my classic sigs set and my raw 70s and 80s sets.

Will this have a trickle down affect to the Sports Card Expo in November?

Are we, as buyers, going to be scruntinizing every graded card we purchase from now on?

Has PWCC broken the grading game as a whole?

Not sure how close you have been following this but there are whole sets compromised like 54 parkies and other sets with large white borders. Multiple Beliveaus have been trimmed and thats only the ones found sold by PWCC, trimmed by Moser and resold by PWCC. Lots of 51s as well. PSA appears to have no idea on sizing or borders on these sets. Its likely thousands of these cards have been trimmed and graded.

So you def want to know sizing and understand how much border to expect. The days of trusting the TPG to get it right are over, for me anyways. The trim jobs on some of the cards found are comical, its incredible they can’t measure a 5k 51 howe or richard
