Fake Patches and Trimmed High End Cards

USA Today has picked up the story. This is going more and more mainstream.

As well, Sports Collectors Daily has a piece on Jeff Lichtmann, PWCC's lawyer and a litte on why he took the case. Speaking to a few dealers at the National, Lichtmann has been HIGHLY critical of PWCC and they think he got involved because he has a ton invested in vintage and is trying to help clean things up to protect his investment (I don't blame him ONE BIT) and he says some of that in this article.

Glad this is hitting the mainstream news.

I've been lurking over on the BO forums and reading the various threads on this. Crazy good work those folks are doing.

Thanks for keeping HI updated on the latest.

Were PSA involved in this for giving out favorable grades and/or knowingly looking beyond the alterations?

Because if that's the case, I wonder if that PSA 10 Gretzky RC is one of them? I don't know if it's trimmed or not however the top and bottom edges look a lot flatter than the common jagged wire cut on the right edge that was prevalent for these cards, but to me the fact that it is visibly off-center and was still able to get a perfect 10 from PSA makes no sense to me

moral of these stories: stay away from the majority of high end stuff and nearly all graded stuff.

This is why I wish the hobby would head back to the late 90s-early 2000s. Cheaper products, more set building and insert/parallel driven. So tired of the hit products that are a bore to break and cost a fortune.

A lot of the issues are with vintage cards. So, changing future products doesn't really help with those trying to find the perfect 10 vintage card.

ohh man I really miss the 90's. I was born in 87, so I can't comment on the pre 90s era, but the 90's was when i was introduced to the hobby. Just like you said, it was all about those shinny inserts, and putting sets together, even the base sets were fun. I remember putting the 1998-99 Bowman's Best base set with rookies together and I had a blast. We'd be trading on the smaller message boards and sending cards in envelopes lol. Didn't have to worry about too many hobby issues then!

Nope. Many of these trimmed cards are high end auto rookies across all sports. The high end market has taken over the hobby. I just wish there was more room for the lower end stuff. Set builders have left the hobby because it's just too expensive or near impossible to build master sets nowadays. I miss the days when there was at least 1 release per week but it never cost over $80 a box. UD, Topps, Pacific, ITG were all putting out products that were fun to break, build, collect and rarely broke the bank.

Amen, brother! I'm 15 years older and my favorite era is also late 90s-ealy 00s. It was all about making cool cards (as shiny as possible lol) and I remember having an e-mail list of 100s of people who would be set/player/team collectors who would buy or trade with me on a weekly basis. Those days are loooong gone.

Yup, I wish there were more products like this as well. For the most part I just pick off the Roy base cards from the new releases and mainly focus on filling the gaps in my PC from previous years.

I really miss doing group breaks with Breakaway SC but their has just not been the draw for me in a couple of years. I am not interested in chasing the big rookie or even any rookie. The majority of the products now are very much rookie driven.

Autographs and game used cards are no interesting to me (outside of a few subsets) so I get really excited at releases with many parallels of the base card. More OPCP type sets would be very much welcome in my world.

Synergy would qualify as that, and most people hate it (not me though).

24 cards in a $65-$70 box is quite expensive. I think that's always the main issue. Not to mention the base set for this product is extremely low numbered, it would cost way too much (and be extremely difficult) to build it. The value in breaking many of these products just isn't there. If you have products with 18-24 packs with 5-10 cards per pack at an affordable price, you reach more customers. No need for autos or game used. Just base set, rookies, inserts and parallels. O-Pee-Chee is the perfect example.

The problem is that some card companies want their money RIGHT NOW. People bash Topps but they put out cards at all price points and you can (STILL!) even get complete factory sets with all of the hottest rookies for $45. They have high end stuff but they also sprinkle high end into their low tier. They have it down and it works.

I know UD is trying to bring back some of the set building products (like Synergy) but I wish there were more OPC/MVP type releases. It doesn't need to be super cheap but something geared towards set building. An easy base set, some SPs and even tough SSPs plus inserts and parallels. I know for a fact many people would enjoy these because I have more people message me about MVP and O-Pee-Chee than any other product I bust and it's not even close.
