The sales window for the Topps Project 2020 Griffey by Keith Shore (who I’m led to believe by this artwork to be 6 years old) just closed. Topps LITERALLY just printed $2 million.

If you don’t start doing stuff like this, you don’t like money.

With a Print Run that big, there must have been several bulk buyers where the price is lower that $20 per card so I'd guess closer to $1.7M.

Still HUUUGE!

I was going to buy the Griffey this morning....forgot....glad I did now after seeing the PR. But I do like it so may grab one on the secondary if they stick close to the $20 mark

So Topps has come out with this thing called Topps Project 2020. They get artists to create their own rendition of a classic Topps Rookie Card and then they print them to order and sell them for $20 a shot. It's caught on slowly, but the ones with a lower print run are now selling for pretty good money and this Griffey had 99,000 copies ordered. Topps will print them, encase them and ship them and swim in their money.

I think they're cheesy personally, many of them are just way too cartoonish for my liking. That said, Topps NEEDS to be back in the hockey industry, period. They're extremely innovative and have DECADES of hockey history to draw from for products.

I am only buying the ones i like. That didnt appeal to me.
but Christ i have bought a metric tonne of these.

Not to mention they also make 'artist proof' cards /20 for $199 that continuously sell out every single day.
This is what it looks like when you embrace the new realities of card collecting and its a big reason why there is a little boom in the baseball card industry right now. It saddens me as a collector to see what little Upper Deck has done to embrace this market but at the same time it just boggles my mind how UD can leave so much money on the table by not embracing change.

Edit: While I won't be a buyer of this product, these cards have really started to grow on me. I think I might have been similar to many others when I initially dismissed this project, particularly because of the 'art' (or lack of it). After seeing more and more of them released, checking out the artists and how their 'styles' translate to the cards and then seeing the same card done by different artists, its really grown on me. Its cool, fun and different.

You are forgetting ePack. They are doing well there + their Authenticated line of products do well too. I doubt they are hurting right now.

I disagree, they’re hurting, hand to mouth, trust me.

As far as the Topps Project 2020, I’ve been buying what I like, focusing on a few sets, and also picking up some of the ones I know people are going to be hot for. It’s so much fun! Yay Topps!

Ryan should be cheering for Topps to be back in hockey, rather than worrying about UD doing stuff they won’t do..............until Topps gets into hockey! ;)

Oh and one more thing to add. Do you know that the League has to approve every venture? The NHL is conservative based on historical significance. Might want to chew on that too. Baseball and basketball are so progressive and ahead of their times.

Topps heritage hockey. That is all i have to say

I've actually started buying a few of these, at first on eBay, but now from the Topps site. Probably wouldn't have noticed them if I hadn't seen the discussion between Jeremy & Barrie on Sports Cards Live. As for buying what you like, I tried, but the price headed up to the moon faster than a Saturn rocket. My favorite card is the Ted Williams by JK5, a recent one sold for close to $1000 USD, after previous copies were in the $600 range. WOW!

From the lack of anything innovative beyond ePack, I'd imagine this was the case. Still, UD has a stable of exclusive "spokespersons" that they do very little with. I'd have to imagine that with what they have at their fingertips and what they've accomplished, there must be something disabling their ability to do more.

Topps coming back would be great, but so would me winning the lottery. The reality of it is that UD (unless the NHL hates money, too) needs to think like Topps does and bring some spark to hockey cards. Cards made out of wood can only bring so much excitement.

I think the fact of the matter is one of two things need to happen. One, UD actually makes a legitimate effort to improve the quality of their products, or two, another company (better yet, companies) needs to be licensed. The hockey card scene is just being watered down and lowered in quality with each and every release from UD. Does UD have the potential to turn things around? Yes, absolutely. Will they without external pressure? Definitely not.
