I've come a long way..........restraint....do you have any?

I used to pay whatever it took for a card, now I pass on most items over a certain price... Why pay $300 for a Turco card when I can get a full gamer for a little bit more than that.

I have a list of cards like this, at some point I told myself, what's the point?

It doesn't bother me anymore, it used to when I was a bit younger. People are entitled to list their cards for whatever they want, and to reject whatever offer comes their way. Though, in numerous cases, I know that i'm probably offering the most that they'd get for that particular card. Seems like that's the case for many of you guys too.

There are a handful of cards that I've been watching for years, that I feel are way over priced for my PC and every 6 months I send emails to the sellers to try and work something out.

There's many cards I watch and wait to snipe at the last minute, some I win but mostly I loose, oh well, can't win em all. I know a lot of them are not rare so loosing isn't a big deal but for what some end at is crazy low. I am always seeing buy it nows I want to pull the trigger on all the time but sometimes I don't but the longer I wait the quicker I know it will sell.

One card I wanna hit the bin on is a 2005-06 ITG Ultimate Goalie Gear Tiny Thompson glove/pad Silver its 49.99 I would hit the bin just haven't worked my way up to it

$50 isn't bad !
you can do it.. Lol

Plus 1000+ on this post.

As a player collector, I'm way past the point of thinking "I want to get them all!"

A 1/1 serial number, with some gold foil, means the same thing to me as a 4/5 serial number, with silver foil.... assuming the patches are comparable.

The "real 1/1s" Shields, Megapatches, etc: Yeah, those are something special. When there's 8 different versions of a card?? Meh. I'm over it. Of course make a design I really like... and that might change.

I used to have an itchy trigger finger when I was collecting high end and limited stuff, but now that I've pretty much shifted into graded rookies I have way more restraint than I used to. If I miss one or the copies currently on eBay are overpriced I can wait out a better deal and the right one usually appears within a couple of weeks or so. There's usually lots out there and always more coming around the corner.

Good thread OP! Haven't posted for a while, but I realized some people were holding cards I wanted hostage for top dollar (my mistake for setting the precedent and paying top dollar). I used to pay up for my wishlist, but then rational though prevailed with time, got busy with life and started to find peace with cards I have. I am pretty excited to have at least one PC card incoming soon. Think maybe a second one. My list of wants is very small and finally a good focus. I am at peace with the hobby and if the rare chance to acquire something I really want at a reasonable price shows up, I am just thankful. It's taken a decade plus to get to this mindset, but it's worth it.

And just like that it's sold

Thanks for all the posts, it's been a nice follow

Here is a Adam Henrique card I absolutely would love to add to my PC

2 years, maybe even 1 year ago I would've probably hit the BIN and been super happy to land this

Now I submitted a best offer that I felt was fair, auto declined, went in higher auto declined again so I will sit and wait and probably never own it.

I'm OK with that now.

Anyone else have any stories? Any examples of cards they sit and watch now instead of just going and grabbing it?

A bit different from past posts, could be interesting............

I am the complete opposite for my Wellwood collection, because I have only 5 cards left, willing to pay anything to get to 100% complete

I'm with you. I'm not willing to pay anything for the remaining cards in my Andrew Alberts collection, but I'm not expecting discounts. But they're pretty much all serial'd to less than 5, so just finding them is a challenge.

For me, it started 10+years ago when I began to dismantle my vintage collection of old oddball stuff - Quaker Oats photos (near complete set), OPC sets (Four in One, Pucks, Booklets, ...... ), Beehive photos (500+ from 3 series) and Shirriff / Salada coins (11 binders / 7 complete set).
THEN 5 years ago or so, I started setting up @ EXPO and out went the RCs (SPA, Ultimate and The Cup) and 20 -30 cards from my sub PC (Roy, Brodeur, Yzerman, Crosby, Gretzky and a few more).

NOW I only collect Bobby Orr but NOT just everything as I am quite selective AND price matters. I have passed on plenty (ebay WATCH) and some that were offered.
I am quite selective of anything else with my monthly budget in mind and acquire stuff to restock my inventory of certain players / products only!

I am opened to trade offers on some of what I posted in my S & Ts but will not take cards of lesser OR inflated values and I tend to post less nowadays.
I still ENJOY the hobby but to a lesser degree and periodically, I like to take a break from IT all to spend time on my other interests.

I have had...external situations which forced me to basically give up collecting for the last 14 months or so. I've gotten the odd card here or there, but for the most part I came to a complete stop on buying.

I was also in the boat where I tried to collect everything for my Alex Edler pieces. I still try to collect most of his stuff but at a price I am willing to pay, not necessarily hitting the BIN. Patience usually pays off, although sometimes you will be waiting years but I am ok with that.

For stuff other than Edler, I'll try to acquire key Young Guns and/or Future Watches.

Prior to liquidating 99% of my collection in one shot; I player collected and collected subsets. There was an addictive feel to it of always having something "incoming" and constantly searching multiple forums and ebay to make sure I didn't miss out... and it started to consume way too much time. Even when I completed a set; it still be looking at ways to improve (ie. a better patch).

With time as each set had 20 cards of a given player multiplied over 10 sets a year and numerous parallels, I gave up with the "have to have every card" ... I took a few years off, recalibrated and now just collect cards that appeal to me ... quality over quantity.

Not too mention two kids, a house and other expenses now take priority.
