COMC Charged Florida State Tax on my Deposit (as they should)

ok.. Just went shopping on COMC.
Went to add $50 to acct.
It showed me being charged $54.25 ?

I have NEVER (3x) adding funds been charged tax before.
Even if they added tax to certain purchases it should be at CHECKOUT.. Not before I even buy something.
I looked at history, never.. Last time was only 2 months ago.

They change something ?
Because that will change my buying there.
If a $50 purchase now cost 54 big difference.

They have to charge tax on sales and I can't remember when it started but chose to collect upon adding funds to your account. It definitely does make you think before loading up the account to buy certain cards
 
No, they collect tax at point of sale - they're selling you $50 in store credit. COMC is based in Washington state and that's likely how the laws read there.

It ain't them, man. Blame government.

You purchased store credit. You were charged tax on said purchase. That state charges tax on purchases. Pretty simple.
 
I added $10 US just now to my COMC account and wasn’t charged any tax. I’m in Toronto so might be a local thing (for OP check what the tax details are in Florida).

While I understand the frustration, let's not throw stones at the wrong entities.

Here is some more information about the tax policy. As users have said, it's the government, not COMC. Clearly Florida was added to the list more recently. As a Maryland resident, I've been paying a tax on COMC store credit for quite some time now. The same thing happened to eBay and Amazon around the same time. Frankly, while no one enjoys paying taxes, the government is just closing these loopholes. I remember being surprised a while back when I wasn't paying tax on Amazon orders.
 
That doesn't make sense. So are they still going to charge tax when you purchase something? Because then you'll be double taxed. In California they don't charge tax on credit or gift cards
 
COMC charged the tax on the purchase of store credit. The only tax you get charged on purchases inside COMC are the commissions COMC collects.

Strictly speaking for Canada alone, literally any transaction - trade, barter, currency - is eligible for taxation.
 
Do you HAVE to use store credit to buy on COMC or is PayPal/CC also an option? I've only bought a couple of things on COMC like six+ years ago and I don't recall having to buy store credit back then.

there is no tax on gift cards though, in Ontario anyways. So I would think that is the same as store credit. But I could be wrong. You pay the tax on the purchase you make with the gift card.
 
I think the assumption being made is that when you purchase their store credit it is with the intention of using it to buy items on their site. So if you only buy a $25 card you still have $25 credit left to buy another $25 card. I think their is some limitation on withdrawing the remaining funds too.

Overall it is a tax that they are required to collect. So for simplicity they collect it upfront. We do not all agree with their pricing structure and fees but they are running a for profit business. As always it comes down to the statement, of you don’t like it, don’t use it.

You can still do it that way, yes. If there's a card you want for $20... you can just pay for the single card.

The only thing you require store credit for, is to make offers. You can hit the BIN and pay with paypal directly, but you can't offer me $15 for my $20 card, if you don't have $15 in credit.





Adding to the tax conversation, it's part of what has slowed down my use of the COMC mailbox. Having the card routed to COMC.... it's been this way for a while.... you have to pay 6.5% Sales tax, as the transaction now falls under WA state, and they're on the list. Has nothing to do with COMC, but if I bought a $30 USD card on eBay... and my choices were to take $2 (USA-to-USA) to COMC, or $10 shipping to have it sent to me, it doesn't make sense to use the mailbox anymore:

$2 + $3.60 in COMC handling fees, + 25 cents (ish) to ship back to me at a later time, + $1.95 in WA taxes: it's going to cost over $7 to get that card to me, and I'll have it in hand months from now. Paying the extra couple of bucks to have it shipped to Canada makes much more sense.

Still a great way to get around sellers who won't ship to Canada, and GPS though.

So COMC doesn't charge tax on the actual purchase item? Sorry, I've never used it, I just find this curious and backwards to everything I've experienced with this type of transaction.
