Good Afternoon,

I am in need of a definitive answer to a certain question regarding 1980's BGS graded OPC cards.

The question is:

Is it possible that a "factory packed" 1985-86 OPC (Any Player) hockey card can receive a BGS grade of 10.

Thank you very much.

There are lots of PSA 10's of 80's OPC cards and Beckett no longer knocks down for 'OPC rough cuts' so I'd guess its possible.

I believe OPC had factory direct vending cases available during the 1980s where quality first hand cards / sets were produced. Maybe someone in the London, Ontario might be able to clarify matters.

Good Evening, Could you please tell me what "first hand cards" means?
I honestly am not familiar with that designation.

Thank you very much.

The vending cases were generally printed after the cards were packed out in wax cases. At that point generally the wires were sharpened again before printing/cutting - so those cards could come out with sharp edges and none of the standard rough cuts that were synonymous with OPC

AND possibly they can in plain white 500 or 1,000 card boxes. Not sure how many cards @ box or numbers in a case.

I just want to verify that a card from a vending case will look exactly like a card from a wax case.

Thank you.

Cards are the same as wax packs Here is an auction. And according to the owner there are 8650 cards in this particular vending case.
Not sure if they wew all the same. For some reason I want to think in the later years there were only 5,000 cards in a vending case.
But not 100% sure,

That case above is a cut card case. The cards are "loose" inside the case. Quality will be lower overall then wax.

Love the description on that case:

"this case is an ideal investment or would be the best place to pull perhaps a dozen or more Gem Mint examples."

Ya sure, a 30% Gem rate on a cut card case. Odds are you wouldn't hit one, much less 12.

The cards going in were possibly better then wax - not sure why this would be however, the tough cards are on the same spot on the sheet and were all cut in the same factory. What could possibly make vending cards better centered? My experience with vending is centering is usually worse.

But even if they went in centered, they are loose in that case and have moved around probably a few times in the last 35 years. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority had touched corners. That said, amazing product , would love to rip it.

Good Evening,

I should really just ask the question that I am meaning to ask.

In your opinions,
Is it the responsibility of a seller of a BGS 10 or BGS 9.5 mid 80's OPC hockey card (with an EDGES subgrade of 10 or 9.5) to list anywhere in an auction description (or to communicate) that the card either is or possibly NOT FACTORY PACKED?

Thank you very much.

If they know the truth they should state the truth. But 2 problems with that...

1) some sellers aren’t 100% truthful
2) they might not have personally pulled the card from a pack/box 40 years ago, so how would they definitively know?

Regardless, if you have a strong opinion that’s it’s sheet cut why not move along to the next auction?

Thank you rohara.

I just bought a lot of 1985 O-Pee-Chee WWF Series 2 cards from a vending case. They are heads an shoulders better than anything that came out of packs. I’m going through them to see what I’ll send to PSA, but from what I see so far, I’m looking at 7s minimum. Some are SHARP. I would imagine the same would go for hockey.

Hello Triple,

Just for clarity on my end,... when you say sharp are you referring to the EDGES?

Thank you.

I’m talking about overall presentation. I have about 100 cards and some edges are high grade. Someone else mentioned it, new wires were used to cut these vending boxes.
