Hi There.

I haven't been actively selling in the past couple of years, but I sold an expensive item a few weeks ago. The buyer paid with Paypal and I printed the shipping label from there. I noticed the address was a bit "different" and came to realize it was an eBay Global Shipping Program address. This is the first time I've dealt with this situation. Take a look a the most recent update. Am I to be concerned with the way this is heading?

GSP is trash. I bought a baseball card and when it arrived, it was a football card. I advised the seller and peeled the GSP label off the envelope and it wasn’t even his return address or my address on the envelope. They simply put the wrong label on the wrong envelope.

eBay wound up refunding me and didn’t touch the seller.

I had something similar happen when dealing with a purchase from the US using the GSP. Wound up getting a completely different item. After some back and forth with the seller, found out that my package went to someone else in Toronto and thankfully we all communicated and got the right card to the right people (it was a 1/1 PC item). After inspecting the envelopes, this was TOTALLY the fault of the GSP in Kentucky. The original bubble envelope was addressed to the correct individual, however when the packages were "re-addressed" from the GSP to the final destination, the address stickers were incorrectly applied.

I get how this is easier, simpler and more secure for the seller but for any cross border transactions - so much potential for lost/misdirected packages. I tend to stay away from any seller who uses the GSP unless it's for a rare card or PC item that I can't find anywhere else.

One can only hope that ebay will do something to change but I feel like that's not going to happen any time soon.

As long as you safely got it to the Global Shipping Centre in Kentucky, you are off the hook.

eBay takes responsibility after that. If it gets lost or they will take the financial hit.

Thanks. That's what I was hoping to hear. We shall see.

I never signed up for the GSP, so it must be the buyer who opted to use their service.

No chance! Buyers would never choose this. I think eBay sneakily signs you up automatically and you have to remove yourself from it if you don't want it.

Cost for GSP is crazy. I actively avoid sellers who employ it. The cost is too prohibitive for low dollar value purchases.

I had another item sold the same day, but this was the only one that triggered GSP.

Just checked my seller preferences and you are right... I was auto-enrolled. Just opted out.

I would go further and say 8/10 times they dont know the actual cost to the buyer.

They don't because they only receive the amount plus cost of shipping to Kentucky.

If you ever buy an item using GSP, it actually splits your single payment out into two. One goes to the seller, the second ("Import Charges") goes directly to eBay. The seller never even sees a single reference to the second payment. They don't even know it exists. But the buyer should receive two payment notifications from Paypal, one for each payment.

I send them a message asking if they would consider shipping outside of the GSP and 8 out of 10 times they do.

I used to do this too but eventually just didn't bother anymore. Most of the time the sellers I would contact had no idea what the GSP program even was or how to remove it. Just became too much of a P.I.T.A. to deal with so now I just factor in the GSP price when deciding to purchase or not.

GSP is a complete waste of time, it adds a completely extra step by adding "a middle man" and does nothing but add excessive time to shipping. And exactly what Triple B stated, if you ask, most sellers will agree to ship otherwise, as I use fedex, and most seem to be on with that route. Sellers have no idea how easier it could be, but instead choose to use a service that is completely unnecessary.

I find the GSP inconsistent and you never know until you go to ebay CHECK OUT to find the actual shipping costs are.
Here are 2 recent examples of what to expect ......

ME - Great offer of 30.00USD on the card but after REVIEW the total cost comes out to 53.03 USD which includes International Shipping (13.76 USD) and Import Fee of 9.27 USD! TOTAL 23.03 USD in shipping under the Global Shipping Program for a $30 card!
The usual dollar exemption on cards brought into Canada is 100.00 CAD / 80.00 USD.

SELLER - Sorry but Global is the only way I ship to Canada. Had too many people scam me and say the cards never arrived.

Obviously the SELLER does not realize that the GSP is sometimes at fault for lost card(s) for which ebay must come good!

Here's one card I did receive thru GSP, Intelcom delivery service in less than 2 week service .....
International Priority MAIL / Global Shipping Program = 17.53USD GLOBAL = Ridiculous

BUT 8.00USD ebay winning bid ....

The exemption limit is $20 CAD on pretty much everything, unless it is marked as a gift and contains a birthday or some such card, and then it increases to $60. It is most definitely NOT $80USD/$100CAD.

So for your first card since it was over exemption limit, you paid $4.50 USD in taxes as part of your Import charges, and the rest ($4.77 USD)to eBay for clearing your item on your behalf. The shipping charges would have included both the cost of tracked shipping from the seller to Kentucky, and then the tracked shipping from Kentucky to you.

The second card had no taxes owing or brokerage charges, only the cost of shipping from seller to Kentucky, plus the cost of shipping from Kentucky to you.

RE - It is most definitely NOT $80USD/$100CAD.

It is in reference to card(s) shipped to an American USPS location AND then brought / declared at a Canadian border crossing. It has nothing to do with card(s) mailed from the USA to Canada. Simply clarifying matters but irrelevant now that the border is closed!

Ah yes, that is definitely a different exemption limit. My bad. LOL
