Sport Card Expo Thoughts?

Not really Expo related but besides printing issues, pandemic etc could this be UDs way of telling the distributors to stop playing the “jack up the price” game after a week of release? I think the distributors lost out the most at Expo simply because they could just wheel all of the product to the dealers in one place. Or would the same stuff just happen only a month or so later on when it does get released? I didn’t go to Expo but I heard good things lol.

Nah. This was only due to the printing and packaging issues that UD and other card manufacturers are dealing with.

Exactly.

I learned that UD and Panini especially are scrambling to get access to sufficient high-quality printing services. Panini used their position to essentially muscle Leaf out of their access altogether.

That is what I thought.
UD isn't the one losing out on the feeding frenzy - it's the Distributors.
UD is still going to sell out of the product.

And as I said in another post about supply chain problems - if you are not in manufacturing or own retail, food or other product businesses I don't think you understand how bad some of the issues are. The simplest items that are part of a product are unavailable at this time. Not to mention the utter nonsense that is shipping from Europe to the USA - Expedited air shipments being held at UPS International hub in Germany for 3 weeks!

Just to add another wrinkle, I do wonder if there is a tinge of regret when it comes to producing Extended Series.

The very large print run probably contained enough material goods and print services for at least one, if not both, of MVP and Series One.

Nearly down to cost now, it could become the Black Friday Ground Hog Day product of 20-21.

Remember Fleer Retro.. look at what happened now.. I doubt it stays this low .. not at retro levels but not what it is now.

I'm really enjoy Extended Series from the 05-06 Young Guns set building aspect, but I do think it's missing quite a few aspects that Fleer Retro had built in - PMG, Jambalaya, Retired player content, autos... the type of things that have helped recover the product long term. Extended is primarily based on this rookie class, so that's what it's going to live or die by. I also think some of the designs of Extended weren't as faithful to the originals as they could have been.

I'm definitely enjoying having a product at normal prices!

Ameet you are dead on with comments 1&2.

The layout was different but if you walked around you would have found the other rooms. Everyone should have picked up a floor plan to navigate thru the Expo.

GM,
Thoughts on the expo were these..
1. Love the new room, it felt larger and I hope we are back here..
2. Loved the way it was laid out. It felt like people had room to breathe

Really looking forward to the spring Expo which is usually the ONE less attended!
With UD1, UD2, SPA and The Cup to name a few potential Upper Deck releases, they will have enough of their products to satisfy everyone.

Well... not Cup but yeah. With SPA and Series 1 debuting for Spring Expo it should be good.

Gene (blueknight91) and I were in the back room and the fact that a lot of people said that they didn't know that there were vendors in the back is really falls to a lack of communication/signage directing people to know there was more to be found.

With that said - even being in the back, Gene and I did extremely well and had a blast (I do need to setup a way to exchange CAD back to USD :D ) - it also helped that we where on the corner when you first walked into the room with the stage and auto signers.

The Expo and The Hobby

Sorry this has taken so long to post, been a crazy week at work since getting back from the expo.

I hadn’t been to the expo in a few years and brought my 15 year old son for his first time. He had fun going through the 2016 release of pokemon cards he played with when he was younger and even busted a box. Boy have those cards gone up quickly!

I agree with most of the comments. I wasn’t a fan of the new layout. I would have missed the back room were it not for my son who noticed it, and the dealers there complained about the lack of exposure and the autograph lines crowding their booths.

I did feel “priced out of the hobby” as 99goals put it. Not because I don’t have the money, but because I have a hard time paying 3k for a card I could have bought a couple of years ago for $500. Will it continue to rise? Who knows, we’ve seen big drops in the market in the past, and the buying, selling, collecting, and trading were always more fun to me than the investment.

I will say, I had a VIP pass and walked around all weekend. I saw the vast majority of high dollar Gretzky, Mcdavid and other cards from Thrursday evening still sitting in dealer showcases at closing on Saturday leading me to believe they weren’t flying off the shelves.

All in all, we had a great time, and will be back again.
