Canucks trade Horvat to Islanders

The Vancouver Canucks traded All-Star center and team captain Bo Horvat to the New York Islanders for winger Anthony Beauvillier, youngster Aatu Raty, and a conditional 2023 first-round selection, the teams announced Monday.

The first-round pick is top-12 protected for this year's draft and becomes unprotected if it slides to 2024, reports TSN's Pierre LeBrun. The Canucks are also retaining 25% of Horvat's cap hit and salary, according to LeBrun.

"I thought I was going to be a Canuck for life. Things didn't work out that way," Horvat said, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. "It hasn't been an easy year."

Horvat is amid a career campaign, recording 54 points in 49 games, including 31 goals. The former ninth overall pick has accrued 201 goals and 420 points in 621 contests during his nine-year career. Horvat was slated to represent the Canucks at the upcoming All-Star Weekend in Sunrise, Florida.

As an Isles fan we paid a lot but we got what we needed! Is let’s see if it works and if he signs long term!!! First top notch goal scorer since Ziggy!!! No disrespect to Matt Moulson, Kyle Okposo and Anders Lee!

I don't know much about "Beau" and i know zero about Raty, so I will take your word as truth that they paid alot. Are you saying they paid alot, or they literally overpaid? :P

If Bo only stays this season, the Islanders got fleeced. Given that it's Lou Lamoriello, there has to be some sort of assurance Bo will stay... Lou wouldn't take that type of risk, nor does he have that ego that he'd get it done.

For a straight rental I believe we over paid. If he signs long term I'm very happy with what we paid. I really like both players we sent to Vancouver and hope they thrive there but we got exactly what we needed. Can't complain when that happens!

As a Canucks fan....I don't know anything about Beau and Raty. Also was not a fan of the protected first round pick, but I understand it from a NYI perspective. Changes were needed in VAN, hopefully we see some more changes before the trade deadline.

Beaulivier is a good addition to Vancouver. He was the 2nd pick in the 1st round when they picked up Barzal. Late first round pick that is good when given the minutes. I think there is a great opportunity for him with the players in Vancouver for him and the team to be better.

Good change for both teams. Vancouver isn’t going to make a dent in the playoffs this year and they got really good value for a star player having a very solid year. Best you could get for a guy that has been solid but seems like he caps around 55 pts. He’ll give about 30 pts more for the season, but his potential to be the “one” that was supposed to take over the franchise star role, producing points and leading the team to victory has passed with Vancouver. Solid player, solid potential for being that leader, still, and will be “that guy” in with NYI.

Fairly even trade. NYI needs that change now to help boost them. They have been lacking that pop in a few games this season and I am surprised that they have as many team points as they do.

They have agreed to an eight-year deal as per today's news.
