Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has had an issue with pack-searched Tim Hortons purchases?

Small background story. My father in law went to purchase a sealed box (at my request) so we could break a box together for my son’s birthday. He was told the boxes they had were not sealed and they “all came like that”. So fast forward to the box breaking and we get a World‘s Best early, so this is good. Then pack after pack go by and not one Legendary Celebrations. Right to the end, not one LC card to be found. We did get 100 packs in the box, but something seems amiss. I did the math and I think the chances are about 1.4% of this happening. I am highly suspicious of this box outcome.

So I did call the store and the manager assured me the cards are kept carefully locked away where only managers and supervisors have access etc……. The manager I spoke with by phone sounded legitimately uninformed on the cards and insert odds etc. so I do not suspect it was them involved in this somehow.

It just felt like a big let down given the excitement of the break and my son’s birthday. My son did not understand the math of the box break and what I knew was missing, but it was hard not to be very disappointed for him. It still felt like the fun was taken from it for sure.

Does any else have a similar experience?

This happens all the time. I know for a fact that some employees weigh the packs, keep the ones that are heavier and replace them with others. If the box was unsealed, that just proves that someone tampered with them. I bought a case and every single 100 card box had a seal.

Similar story with me when I wanted a box. They brought me the 100 packs in a paper bag and I told them I wanted a sealed box. They said they were no boxes because they had to return them to Tim's. My first thought was OK someone is searching packs. No way Tim Horton's would want a 2 cent box back.I did get everything I should have out of 100 packs. But I also heard that this particular store was having a major theft problem. So I figured that may be their way of keeping tabs on inventory.

I have heard of this. Pack searching / weighing packs.
When I buy a box, I ask for a sealed one. The last one I bought they opened it to count the packs, but I was able to keep my eye on them.
I can say that my boxes (3 in total) have all been bought at the same location, and all were brought out from the back, nothing near the cash. In one case the manager had to "ok" the transaction.

I've also purchased a 100 pack box and asked for it from the back and than explained the easiest way for them to punch it into the cash register

Tim's cases are easy to search, I am fairly certain it happens often.

Probably because the initial intent wasn't to sell them by the box or case. The idea is to get them into as many hands as possible.

I know it won't happen but I'd love to see a Tim Hortons Blue Jay historic release (current and past Jays) or an MLB release.

Minor rant here but I think they should continue to go with the way it was initially intended to be. I don't even buy the packs, but I don't think people should be allowed to walk in and buy cases, or large amounts of packs. The idea is to get people into collecting, but instead you end up with people buying large amounts and re-selling the hits or the packs. Very scummy IMO

IIRC they used to have a 3 packs per purchase rule. Keep that, and if you have to buy a whole bunch of food to satisfy your desire to open packs of cards, maybe donate the food? The Tim's near where I work has a large homeless population who are always desperately in need of food... the guy in front of me in line today purchased a case of cards and couldn't spare a quarter for the handicapped man sitting outside in the cold. Imagine hoarding something meant for kids while ignoring a desperate human...

Gotta say I agree with this.

There will always be someone who skirts the rules which is likely part of the reason they gave up on that in the first place... and if they didn't allow them to be sold in large lots, they'd have hockey cards for sale all year round, which is a PAIN for the individual store owners.

I'm curious though if those that buy by the box - are you paying the $1 per pack or $2 per pack?

As an aside, I just got back from Winnipeg and packs were $1.50 with the purchase of a beverage (on the signage) - are there different prices across the country?

Without the people buying by the box or case, do you realize how much inventory would be left over? And how do you think people end up building their sets? By sitting outside Tim Horton's to trade?

And to basically say everyone who buys by the box or case is scummy or not charitable is pretty ignorant.

I'm sorry but this post is ridiculous.

My son and I attempted to start collecting Timmy's cards but they were so quickly sold out it was impossible to. Then I go to the expo and see all these guys selling packs, boxes and cases. Sucked but we moved on.

If the stores are smart, they'll allocate a certain number of packs for single sales to make sure they don't sell everything within days. What I've been told in the past is that most owners/managers hate these promotions and would rather sell out and not have to deal with the headaches.

Considering that the idea is for everyone to collect these cards for the enjoyment of collecting, I think ideally yes people would complete their sets by trading with each other. I'm sure kids love the thrill of buying a base set from a guy who has 40 of them already put together.

Feel free to call me ignorant and ridiculous, I'm clearly not part of your clientele anyway

When I bought my box I was charged 2.00 a pack

I'm actually not someone who sells packs, boxes or cases. I do buy sleeves or cases and sell sets and singles to people who don't have access to it in the US, mostly. However, just because you don't like something doesn't make it wrong. Plenty of folks appreciate being able to buy base sets and singles to complete whatever they're missing rather than try and trade with other people. That's where you're clearly wrong. It doesn't make me or anyone else who does this scummy.

And if you think this promotion is geared at kids, think again. 90% of people collecting these cards are adults.

In my 10-year-old son and daughter's ridiculously large circle of friends (I say it this way because we're going broke on buying TWO birthday presents for each seemingly WEEKLY birthday party), I only know of ONE kid that collects these Tim's cards.

In my circle of friends, I know PLENTY.

I know my kids love opening Tims but with us being close to an hour away from the nearest Tim’s they are often sold out by the time we get there. It’s not scummy to buy a box, but it is causing collectors not to be able to buy a few packs pretty quickly! I would t mind some kind of limit to allow people to buy them without making a trip to town the day they are released!

I agree with this. There should be a certain number of cases reserved strictly for single pack sales.

As a side question to original question. For those who have bought a box, were you able to get two full base sets from a box each time? If you did, I guess this could be further confirmation that my box was possibly tampered with if you should get two base sets.
