Thoughts on Canada Post Strike

For those located in the GTA, a seller I just purchased a card from is sending it via chit chats, not sure if that is a service offered anywhere else but sounds like that's a cheap alternative instead of using the big couriers.

I dropped off some packages at my local Chit Chats location on Friday and they were overwhelmed. This is getting bad. Pretty soon, we won't have any options.

I just received a package sent from Canada like this. Took three days to hit the US, then for some reason, another six days within the US to make its way to delivery but delivery was fine. Think it was like $7.50 CAD for shipping.

I wish it was an option. Closest drop off location is 2-3hours away currently.

A bit related, but was there an update from COMC on what was happening with all of the submissions dropped off at the Toronto Expo? I'm guessing they were mailing them back to themselves because I haven't seen anything change on the status of the two submissions I sent, one of which was at Elite level.

I got the notice that they received mine, and nothing since. Then agian, I'm on BASIC.

Scott: 3 hours? Luxury. EDMONTON. That's my closest.

Touche!

I have a package coming via ChitChat and it seems to be moving well from the east coast. It dropped off to them on the 5th, has went past me to the Mississauga sorting facility and is now in transit (I assume to me).

Thanks - went back through my deleted emails folder and saw one there from COMC stating that the postal strike delayed a bunch of the consignment drop offs from the Expo... so I guess my stuff is sitting in a warehouse somewhere belonging to Canada Post... Ay Caramba.

I feel your pain. I've got a pile of stuff sitting in a depot here IN TOWN that were due to be delivered on the 15th. Including a giant-*** pile of cheap nonsport wax from a dealer buyout.

This Toronto Expo I dropped off 5 cards to COMC, 1 of which was Elite.

They were all added to my account within 10 days. Before the usual 14 day submission.

Listening to the labour minister speaking now, I think from what I have heard they are stepping in now to get this resolved. I am not 100% as I came into it a bit late.

Yup back to work finally! Then in a few years we can use Amazon to ship everything in Canada :)

Amazon will never deliver lettermail which is what most people use to ship cards. If you were using a tracked service, Amazon won't be cheaper than what Canada Post provides for 95% of examples

They're kicking the can down the road until May. Then chances are the whole thing starts over again. Personally it would be better to let it play out as it is. The people striking have a lot more to think about when they are outside in extremely cold weather as opposed to May. Not to mention they risk losing 3 stat holidays of pay in a few weeks. However a decision to force them back to work is par for the course in terms of bungling things from the current Federal government.

Canada Post needs to implement the system that the USPS has. You can ship a small bubble mailer with tracking anywhere in the US for a few dollars. We get hosed on any type of tracking service here.

It's a matter of scale. US has nearly 10x the population that Canada has in a smaller geographic area. So Canada Post has to service a larger delivery area with a fraction of the customer base. From a nation wide perspective Canada Post is relatively affordable. There is a reason why no alternatives can offer across the board lower prices, it's because it's not possible.

If 99.9% of our population lived within 100KM north-south of the USA border, the resulting band of densification sure could help achieve economies of scale. We've got too few people for such a large land mass. :P

It is simply incredible to me that 13.4 million people inhabit Southern Ontario itself, while "just" 11.7 million inhabit all of BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
