I was thinking if/when UD makes The Cup this year will that only enhance the value of 2005 Cup stuff or will it drive down the value of it. I guess in terms of value I mean growth potential and such.. is 1st year of the Cup more valuable as being the only year of the Cup or will another year of the Cup make it more valuable?

I'm gonna guess that the value (secondary market or unbroken stock...if there still is any) will be directly linked to the overall quality of the inserts and the RC crop that can be found in it. Since last year was a bumper crop of decent and collectible rooks, compounded by the fact that most of the insert sets were good looking and very sought after, I would say that last year's issue will stand the test of time and be as collectible - if not moreso given the limited nature of every freakin' card in the set, regardless if UD decides to do it again.

Do I think they would do a set like this again? Probably, but it would take a special set of circumstances mixed with an awesome set of first year talent like we had in 05-06 to have the same impact.

I think the RC will hold actually go up but the other cards will slowly erode over the years I think.

Thanks
Ken

I believe they will release another edition of the Cup this year and it should not drop the value of the 1st series. If you look at Premier Collection auto/patch rookies, their prices have never dropped. These will always be the highest end rookies to find so my thought is the 2005 ones will always be the most sought out due to the fact that it was the first edition, so to speak. That's my 2 cents anyway...

Lionel, Good thread. I'll chime in. I think the only thing that will hold their value or increase over time are the True RC Auto Patches of the "right" players. I don't think the product being released again will hurt the prices. More likely it will help. The Brand will continue to develop a following if it comes out every year. Like SPx. Not sure if that means the Crosby or Ovechkin have room to go up. I guess that depends a lot on their long-term performance on the Ice.... As for the countless Common Auto Patch RC's #/199 I bet they Tank. For example, who is gonna want a Barry Tallackson RC twenty years from now even if it is 3 color. My $.02.... Mike

I see some people in this topic saying that the stuff will keep its value, but after, they only talk about the RCs.

I think, like Brisco, that the veteran stuff will go down in value. It did so with Premier Collection.

Of course the only thing that will hold or go up are the rookies. In every set that is usually the case. Very rarely will you see autos or memorabilia in any product go up.

Thanks for the responses guys.. I guess the set is only as strong as the rc class which has been true for all high end releases the last few years.. I can't see The cup being made this year with only 2 big rcs this year, Malkin and Kopitar.. but knowing UD and their money ****ing ways they'll make it just to make money even though the quality will suffer..

Actually mike, 03/04 NBA Exquisite no namer rookies still sell rather well. The thing is this.

1) huge rookie in the set (for nba it was lebron, melo, dirko) for (nhl sid, ao, phaneuf)

2) good supporting cast that some of the rookies will shine down the road, nba had wade blow up, hockey has a bunch of these yet to really explode. vanek, lundqvust, steen, carter, richards, bernier and so on.

3) big collectors from other sports buying it up and clueless what it is, this helps because these guys dont care to flip cases for only $1000 profit they would rather sit on them for a very very long time instead of flipping them.

Now because of the 1-2-3 up there, wax stays high, the big rookies keep going up in sales, the middle guys keep going up/down depending how they are playing that week. Next thing you know people want ANY rookie from 05/06 Cup. I think it will continue the trend where if someone heats up even for 1-2 weeks you see a big jump in their nicer cup rookies.

As for 06/07 Cup it will be horrible, sure people will make the case for kessel, anze and so on but you know what, all of the people who made 05/06 cup skyrocket are the guys outside of nhl collecting, they know of 1 player and thats malkin, and they dont put him on the level of sid/ao. 06/07 wont do anywhere near as well as 05/06, sure it will do ok but dont expect tins/cases to jump 200% in 3 months or rookies selling last years. I personally hope UD gets wise and stops trying to milk it, its not a good rookie crop dont do it, keep $75pk ultimate as your high end this year, it worked last year because of the big guys and the supporting cast of rookies.

I think the "OG" edition of any set always has a certain mystique about it.

I think that applies even moreso to the first offering of The Cup because of Ovechkin and Crosby.

I think a lot of the patches with the primo swatches will continue to rise in value if they ever see the light of day again from collectors PC's (i.e. RC's, Limited Logos, Signature Patches, Honorable Numbers).

Look at what the 04/05 Ultimate oversized patch cards still pull in and they are not even signed. Now couple that with The Cup's hard-signed autos and a super-high price point and I think in general, most cards from this set will do well in the years to come, and let's not foget about the super premium inserts like Property Of..., Titlists, Hardware Heroes, Dual Shields, etc.

If they continue to do The Cup I think it will always do fairly well but never as good as the original. Just my 2 cents........
