So I'm debating branching out my collection a little bit and Ken Dryden was my fave goaltender as a kid. (don't ask how it came to be...even I don't know).

I did a quick checklist of his cards via Beckett and there seems to be less than 100 cards, so that seems like a fairly reasonable number, but I'm wondering if it's a deceptive figure.

Does he get a lot of hobby action? Are his cards readily available on ebay or other online stores and even here in this trading community?

Not really interested in starting something that will fizzle with failure when I come to realize I have no chance of actually completing it. I'm already doing that with my Thornton set! :D

Anyway, trying this in vintage first, hockey general later is no responses.

Thanks!

I've heard tell that he is a tough signer......... In that he only has one GU card. Which sells for crazy money. Now as for an AU. I vaguely remember on of those non NHL cards. But hey, I could be wrong?

If you are going to attempt an in-person signing. I've been lead to believe that, that is the way to go.

Wish you well...

Brian

Well I've no intention of trying for his 1 GU card. It's outrageously hard to find. And most of his foreign issues i'm not too interested in either. Mainly looking to complete the Topps/OPC sets from days gone by.

In person is also what I hear as far as auto's go, but I've heard a few stories that he was quite willing to sign stuff received in the mail at his gov't offices. That might be changing now as he aims for bigger and better things, but I am going to try.

His high grade vintage stuff gets decent hobby love. Brian is right he don't sign any more and he only has a UD retro gu and a future trends 72 summit series auto...thats it 1 of each. BTW I have both (not FT) but you can view them on my site http://freewebs.com/newfiecomicguy/ on the personal collection page. I paid $100 for the GU and $120 for the auto. I had 2 gu and sold the other for $100 to a member here and I had 3 auto's I traded one and sold the other for $200. They are tough to find.

As one who looks at a fair amount of vintage, I don't think a Topps/OPC type of collection would be overly difficult to complete. The RC is the only biggie, and the Ldr cards are to be had for a song. Would be a nice little collection to have, from an appreciation of his career standpoint. Good luck if you go for it.

If you decide to go for it I have a pretty good 2nd yr opc :)

*edit*

oh and I also have his 1977 glossy cards, both round & square corners

If you are looking for nm-mt or better for his opc and topps cards, it would be a challenge. His 76-77 opc, 72-73 opc team canada, and 72-73 opc a.s. cards seem to be the toughest to find in truly high grade. Finding the 73-74 topps card centered is a challenge as well.

Good luck, and if you need any help I have a few doubles of his cards.

I agree with most here... the OPC/Topps cards are quite easy to find, even in nrmt condition... the RC might cost you a bunch if you want a beauty (i have a couple crappy ones as set fillers if you want to PM me).

As for the auto card... I actually picked it up at the Expo in the Spring for $50... desperate seller maybe? I don't know... but it's an awesome card. and the Retro GU is coming down a bit as I sure as heck didn't pay that much for the card... maybe $70... just look around awhile, and you might be able to snag one cheap. GL!

I thought Dryden had a GU in last years BTP?

Good luck with the collection. I met him once IP and he signed something for me, but he's notorious for refusing to sign anything that bears his likeness. I got him to sign his boarding pass when he got on the flight I was working :D...

He did have one in BTP and it always sold for $180 - 240. I think a member here bought one.

Dryden vintage is easy to collect, even in high grade. I have collected a fair chunk of his stuff and besides the GU and auto's all stuff is easily obtained at reasonable prices.

You won't get it on ebay for less then $200 and good luck finding one as they usually only appear on ebay once or twice a year.

If you are ever looking into A REAL piece of memorabilia...I may be looking to move this full Stick..Just a teaser with the name plate for now...
