07 Spa

Barrie, it's not so much as being negative but more so wise. I mean if there is enough critisism over a release you would start to think there is reasoning behind it. It's just another case of lets see how much we can sell, which is fine because I realize it's a business but I think it would only be fair if UD released something letting customers know about how many 05/06 rookies are included. I am not sure if it would be so honest to just advertise sid/ao rookies that are numbered to 999 yet there is only 20 of each within 3000+ cases of 06/07 sp authentic. Sid/AO weren't the difficult one's to pull from wave 1. No need to create a false sense of value that will only turn around and make it worse because just like last year wax will skyrocket, people will get beat up and wax will drop.

Vinny, repectfully, I have to disagree here about the negative aspect of these posts. Time and time again, all anyone wants to do is bash UD. I have even let my feelings be known a few times, but once I have, it's over with. I don't revisit and rehash the same thing over and over and over again!

And as far as the see how much they can sell comment? Sure, why not? It's their business, that's what they do, sell us, the consumer, products.

But I really, again playing devil's advocate, want to believe a guy like Karvin, who is one of the hockey departments heads, really wants us, the collector, to get good value and be happy with UD's releases. UD does listen to us and trys to please us, but sometimes the problems they have overshadow the good being done because no one will let go of the bad and move on.

Remember people, Karvin is a corporate guy now and can only do so much without upsetting his bosses, but don't think he forgets his roots. He has a commitment to them but also to us and is sensitive to our needs and wants. What a lot of people easily forget is Karvin is a Toronto guy and huge hockey fan, a former dealer/collector who knows how we all feel on our side of the fence.

It is much akin to Pierre Lacroix selling his stake in his hockey representation group to Bob Sauve when he became GM of the Quebec Nordiques. One thing that made Lacroix so successful was his ability to wear both caps as he had sat on either side of the table.

Karvin is the same and really cares about the hobby and it's collectors.

And to be honest, the good is starting to outweigh the bad by a lot. But then the "haters", if you will, always are quick to point out the wrong and not the right.

As far as value Vin, that's in the eye of the beholder.

I may pull a Rob Blake or Peter Forsberg card I don't have that just tickles me silly and I'll feel like I hit a million dollar box. If I open the same box and hit Malkin, sure, there's money there and I can flip it for cash, but I would rather have cards of my guy.

If consumer B opens that box and doesn't hit a Malkin or Kessel Future Watch autograph RC, he's pissed.

So there is where UD has it's hands tied. They try and give us the right amount of autos, parallels, memorabilia and rookies per box to generate the perceived value we demand. But you cannot please ALL of the people ALL of the time right?

But if if Joe Schmoe rookie card is not the guy you're looking for, there's a instant thread on Beckett or here ripping UD and their "no name" rookies. Sure, some guys could be omitted but in hockey, unlike other sports, a no name rookie has a more legitimate shot of sticking or making something of his career down the road than Jaun Valdez, middle relief for the Devil Rays, who pitches 3 innings, gets a rookie card and is back in Columbia 4 days later.

It is more applicable to a hockey product to have rookie X in there. Some of these late round picks come up big so it's a shot UD has to take to add that aforementioned perceived value in a product. Sometimes they win, soemtimes they lose. You can't totally fault them in that regard.

Look, we all rip wax, buy cards, etc. It's what we love and we are kidding ourselves if any of us act like we're gonna stop. We need to feed the habit and UD is our fix (for the most part as far as hockey). You're either in this hobby or out, no half way. So again, I say we all try and enjoy it, make the best of it or............?

I think SPA looks solid this year and I am hopeful it heals some of the wounds from last year. Time will tell but let's at least see it live before passing judgement?

Just to add my two cents here. If the rumors are true and all of the rookies from last year are going to be included into this years SPA, then I think that's UD's way of saying sorry and giving back to their public.

I know this is asking a LOT since they do have a monopoly on hockey card collectors, but it does make sense. Corporation or not a corporation, they have to make their customers happy and doing such a thing would be a step in the right direction..I for one am looking forward to this years SPA, should be a VERY solid product. Let's just hope the prices aren't through the roof..

I hope so too...however, I'm not getting too excited yet as the price point hasn't reared its ugly head yet (that I'm aware of). If they are giving back as an apology, they should do so at $125-$150 a box. If this thing comes out at $200+, I wouldn't be too happy about it.

What I can tell you, the price point will *start* at previous year's prices...the only release on the top of my head that actually went up in price is BAP Portraits this year. But that's because they made that release high end rather than mid/high end by upping the content.

No other release this year has the triple threat (Sid/AO/Malkin). I'm scratching my head whether the cup will be as legendary as last year. The only way I can see that happening is putting more autos/gu/etc into each tin.

At 200 a box I am not sure who would be buying it. No one I know. But putting the two sets together could be another ploy to take advantage of us collectors once again. That would seriously ****, so let's hope that isn't the case..

Barrie I have no issues with Karvin and know realize he is a collector at heart. My problem is not all of the decisions are up to Karvin, if that is the case I want back my money from 05/06 spa from him :) He was around and knew what was going on with 05/06 spa, he knew it was a disaster and while the train wreck was on course to blow up UD chose to not even tell the customers about it, we had to find out from random leaks by distributors who can be rarely trusted. Sure enough they were right but by the time UD admitted what they did it was way to late. So when all is said and done Karvin is a great guy, the company he works for....thats a whole other story.

I know its a business and well UD can do whatever they like. My whole concern is they will push the 05/06 rookies to sell this 06/07 product, I am ok with that but they will pimp the names Crosby and Ovechkin, that is what I have an issue with. First customers were tricked by thinking they have 999 shots at a crosby or ovechkin in 05/06 spa and now they will be tricked again with this years wax. God only knows how many sid/ao's are in this years product for all we know it could be 5 yet they can plaster it all over the sell sheets. Again the not so informed customer has no idea if there are 900 or 2 of either.

And to whoever says well the 05/06 are inserted are a "bonus" well that is incorrect because of what I stated above it will reflect in wax sales/prices. By them advertising the heck out of sid/ao it will just make people run out for 06/07 spa and then the card shops will in turn do their thing with pricing, it's just a loop and in the end we have no idea what is in the wax exactly.

Hey Vinny I agree with you wholeheartedly with what you said...........there is no way UD isn't going to advertise the crap out of SPA this year and pump the chance to get an Crosby and Ovechkin /99 or a patch auto /100

It's just sad to see that some people see things thru rose colored glasses!!!!

Not sure if this has been touched upon yet, but wouldn't the 05-06 Future Watch rookie cards that are packed out on this years SP Authentic not really be considered rookie cards since they are actually released the following year?? I know you can argue both ways on this, but, if they weren't put in packs in the product last year how can they actually still be considered rookie cards?

I know for sure that it would be impossible to be able to tell whoch ones came out in the 06-07 packs but if there is nothing stopping this what is stopping them from printing thousands of Malkin and Staal rookies this year just so they can put them in packs next year to supposedly increase the value of the rip?

Just my 2 cents...

I won't be back on here tonight to comment further as I am heading to the London Knights game tonight, but that should give you guys something to think about...

Rod

Rod, I think that if the cards aren't stamped in any way, it will impossible to say if they were from 05-06 or 06-07. UD played with the rules, these will be considered true RCs.

And, it opened a door... :(

UD has inserted previous years RC's a s buybacks before, without altering them, and they've been considered RCs still, so as mentioned above, these will still be considered RC's.

I'm guessing prices will stay around the initial SRP, but it's going to maintain a higher price than last years, most definitely.

Cory

Cory, yeah I see your point but at least when they did it before they actually tried to fool us and say they were BUYBACKS even though we all knew that they were just old stock they had. I guess they just went ahead and figured that they couldn't fool us and just say they are using the stock that everyone knows they are using. I guess what they are really saying is that we are smart and cannot be fooled :p

Its a good thing for the boxes of the future holding some value but everyone last year suffered because of it. This was probably part of a big master plan that they came out with last year...

Rod

Thanks Prime...........
