08-09 SP Authentic Hockey Discussion

I don't like the SOTT either, but I also wasn't a fan of last years design. I'll see what they look like, probably won't buy a box, just some packs.

Exactly

Couldn't have said it better myself.
This is one of the few sets where we should cut UD some slack. Should be another winner!

lol...UD can't win. if they stick with the tried and true route, they get bashed for having no creativity. if they do change it up, they're still facing down the barrel of the gun. i for one don't mind the change. they used up the extra real estate nicely and the crosby reminds me of the 04-05 redeemed rc design a little more expanded.

Again, I'm not a UD basher but please explain to me the difference in the product the last 3 years aside from asthetics and the rookie crop.

Didn't last year's come out in late Feb/early March? I'm guessing they're getting the last few rookies to play so far in the season the chance to sign as we speak.

Last season Sergei Kostitsyn didn't play his first game until Dec 15th and wasn't included in the auto version.

I think it was April that it came out last year, as I have some vague recollection of breaking my first box after my birthday. Of course, I'm somewhat addled so who knows.

I will do my usual 1-2 cases of it. Love it every year except 04-05 and 05-06. Release on this is the usual April 10-20th area. It looks great this year.

They need Goligoski and Varlamov in for auto rookies also.

Lots of different thoughts and perspectives here.

First, I personally don't fault UD for having a lack of originality with this year's release. When you churn out 30 products per year then a staple brand such as SPA needs to have an "SPA look". Regardless of the popularity of the designs, I think they've successfully done this while adding a bit of flair.

Now on the topic of cutting back the number of releases each year. Undoubtedly, this would be good for the growth of the hobby. But we have a ton of mid to high end releases for one sole reason: they are high margin products for UD. They are caught under the short sightedness of thinking more high margin products equals higher overall profits instead of growing the hobby. A lot of potential collectors are turned away from the oversaturation.

But SPA is not a cause of the problem. It is a set that (generally) has been deployed excellently by UD except for one very mishandled year. It is a staple product that has a strong relevant place in the hobby and any opinions on the design will be mixed as is with every product that is released.

I think the set looks great, I will be building the future watch set again this year for sure!

The elimination of the Triple-Octo Sott while loosing that extra hit will make it easier to chase the complete sott set, which I may indeed try. that could be considered good marketing on UDs part.

I wish UD would go back to about 20 auto'ed FW like in 02-03 (Great RC year :)) Not 60 like last year... At least a 1/20 chance to pull a Spezza, Zetterberg. Nash or Hemsky was nice. (even 1 in 5 if you look at it that way lol)

Speaking of that, I had to go back and see on the UD website how many auto'ed FW cards that were in the set in 03 and I came across this...

It never was released as an auto...just a regular card like the one below, and I think 185 was Leclaire, but I don't want to go digging right now :)

Do you think UD actually had a plan back then if a player did not return his cards auto'ed? no need for a redemption we'll just release a regular RC with no auto lol

On the topic of this years SPA
FW RC/Patches look nice....the SOTT look to busy, I liked the 02/03 and the 03/04 SOTT not too busy and room for the players auto.

Just me lol

Woohooo!!! White borders!!

I DESPISED last year's FW and the stupid trim at the top and bottom. Almost all the FW had chips or white corners on them as a result. At least the white conceals them just a little bit better
