Let's start the discussion. Will the same thing happen to SP Authentic that happened to Upper Deck Series 2? It's about that time to decide if I want to pre-purchase the case. Anybody else in my shoes? What do you plan on doing?

I have multiple sources to get my case. I can drive to a local timmies and have it in hand for $1300 on release day morning. Much better then saving a few bucks from the states and waiting a week.

i think it might shoot up in price if you wait... your cards will also sell better right away rather than waiting.. were are you getting you case from?

No it wont happen. SPA is a flagship product for UD and always sells well. Series 2 is usually very lightly broken and thats why it was under produced. The last two years for Series 2 also had horrible rookie crops. 09-10 had gustavsson and bozak and 08-09 had brunnstrom and pogge.

I put a call in to my LCS but have yet to hear back. My usual go-to online retailers are DACW and Blowout. Living in Phoenix is tough for a hockey fan since people know absolutely nothing about hockey here (gotta love getting a Couture YG RC for $8 last week).

My 3 options so far are:
1. DACW - $1,180
2. Collect and Save - $1,120
3. Local Card Shop - have yet to hear back

I'm still a little upset that the checklist isn't out yet. I am not 100% sure that Oliver Ekman-Larsson is even in the set!

Kinda cool to see a price on an SPA case, never knew it before. I've always had the pipe dream that if I ever open a case it would be SPA.

SP Authentic Hockey is coming out five weeks from now so there is no hurry with the checklist. And that is an estimation for the release date.

Last year's SPA was either over produced or under coveted as the distribution price actually has gone down a bit since release and it has never been unavailable. This is unheard of with SPA so you may see a reduction in production because of this.

If there is a reduction in production would that not mean more FW autos per box? And/or more case hits per case. I.e. instead of one multi-auto per case you may get two?

Or maybe it was the general lack of value per box caused by the overdilution with marginal rookies getting autograph cards in for the sake of achieving the 3 autos/box claim while still being able to make their profit in the release? It used to be only the 20-25 rookies that actually warranted having autographed RCs in there - now it seems it's 50-60 in the sets now. You know, like Ivan Vishnevsky?

Let us not forget the collation fiasco of 08-09, when you found cases with nothing but Stamkos and Mason autos - caused by the change in the packagers.

Haha and this was considered a bad thing? ;)

As a consumer, here's my #1 question: Is there really $1,200 worth of value in purchasing a case? For example, are there typically benefits to purchasing the case that you might not always get with picking up a handful of boxes here and there? I've never made a "larger" case purchase, so I'm still weighing the options.

I guess I would just be really upset if I finally decided to pony up the $$$ for a mid-range case, but my big hits were FW Autos/patches of Dalpe and Bonino. Is it worth picking up the case? I want to hold these and build a decent collection. Guess it's just those "first case decision" jitters...

If you're buying the case - you can basically count on the 3 autos/box. After that you're elephant hunting looking for the Auto Patches and the Multiple Auto cards numbered less than 10.

Remember that this year - there are auto patches not only of the rookies, but also parallels the base set too. They're not Future Watch or Rookie Review patches this year.

Think about this - for every case of Stamkos and Mason - there was likely corresponding cases of Bonzo and Zippy the Wonder Chimp. If you just dropped $1500 on the latter case, how happy would YOU be?
