12-13 The Cup???

I was just starting to ponder some questions about this years Cup as well. Depending on the list of Rookies that are being released in this years product will decide whether or not I buy a case this year or next.

Haven't heard anything official.

If it's only the few rookies that were released in 12-13, I don't plan on trying it at all, especially not at the price they were selling it for last year.

I don't see them skipping out on their biggest product of the year, but we'll see.

UD is always pretty tight lipped about The Cup until the last minute anyway, but if a dealer like breakaway can't get a straight answer in July who knows what they'll do.

Financially they probably can't afford not to release it. This is a company that recently released an Exquisite basketball product without a single piece of game-used memorabilia and no rookie patches for a price that was the same if not higher than usual.

Personally I would like to see a more veteran-oriented version of The Cup that has a shorter production run but more content of established stars and HOF'ers. Most collectors don't want that though, the rookies and the money that follows them are what matters and the veteran stuff is filler. It's too bad but what can you do.

If they didn't release The Cup it would be strange to go two years between releases

Point - both Panini and UD are only doing 3 12-13 releases after the lockout as mandated by the NHLPA. They are:

Panini - Limited, Rookie Anthology and Prime

Upper Deck - Fleer Retro, SP Authentic & ?

Notice that the last product of the year is usually a high-end release. Since Ultimate was cancelled - what does that leave us with? And since the ultra-high end price point products also likely bring the biggest margins for the manufacturers... that would leave...

My gut tells me that you're right and they will do The Cup. Probably wont know for sure until mid-August.

I heard a couple months ago that UD is going to release The Cup. I don't have any confirmation though.
