19-20 UD Buybacks

They should do this every year. Topps does it with baseball and people love it. It allows UD to get so many more fringe players into their sets than they are normally able to because all they have to do is go back 30 years into their library.

EVERY YEAR, UD.

I recall them saying they were not going to do this product again. Very happy they are doing it though. Can’t wait to see it.

IIRC, they didn't want to do this every year - they wanted it to be a periodic set, maybe every four or five years.

I'm excited for this. I started collecting after the last one so I'm happy to be able to get it this time around. I just hope it's affordable.

Make sure you pre-order it then.

Last time it went out of stock fairly quickly and it went up in price pretty quickly as well.

What's the story with that McDavid shield? Was it bought back by UD or did it never make it to packout?

Bought back, hence the name of the product!
All the cards in this release are buybacks and repacking of existing cards unaltered, or autographed and authenticated with a COA.

How many fringe players are actually going to be in it, though? My main PC guy, Niklas Hjalmarsson, a three-time Stanley Cup champion and a HUGE part of those Cups, has just now started getting some memorabilia cards over the last few years, especially now this year with Premier and The Cup. He still does not have a single autograph card. While it is great to see him finally getting some attention, it really just shows how every product is basically the same over and over and over again. I'd love to see Be A Player make a comeback, because that at least gave legitimate depth players a few non-base cards each year.

Chronology did that this year. Lots of Autos of veteran depth players.

Based on my eBay searching, I don't think the set did very well. Probably priced a bit too high.

The format of Parkhurst 11-12 was much more fun in my opinion than Chronology. Some great cards out of Chronology, but not the same fun as with Parkhurst. With Parkhurst, you had a lot of packs to bust, a set to build and the autos were the icing on the cake. Parkhurst was cool for the average collector: you open a couple of boxes, build your set, enjoy the few autos you got. Chronology is more for breakers than for collectors.

Same, but I’m glad BuyBack is making a comeback!

Agreed on all fronts!

I was going to post the same question actually. I think what Burner meant was the card returned damaged by a customer, and if not, how did they buy it back essentially.

To me it seems rather odd that a 1/1 shield card of the best player in the NHL would be returned for damage. It could be creased, chipped, whatever...I certainly wouldn't return it unless I was guaranteed an almost identical pull.

Neither of us know the answer to that honestly, so it's kind of interesting is all.

Regardless, looks like the product will be fun to bust open!

I think all the cards were supposedly purchased from a variety of sources. Only UD would know that.

I don't think the McDavid shield would be a card from spare stock.

I could see that McDavid shield not being signed in time for packout and instead of saving it for the next Ultimate release they could have just put it in this product. I can’t see UD going around buying up cards online or at shows. They certainly haven’t been sniffing around at my fine wares lol.

Many here can confirm for a fact that UD has indeed bought cards from them in the past at the Expo specifically for projects like this.

I remember a lot of Expo sellers mentioning this prior to the last time UD did a buyback product.
