1972 - The Year In Hockey - The Collectors' Set

Still have room for two more non-memorabilia insert sets, anybody?

Brian Price

Brian,

I don't know who they would be, but what about players who retired in 1972 or even better, players who were inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972? Was also thinking about the Mask set being extended.

Jean Beliveau
Bernie Geoffrion
Hap Holmes
Gordie Howe
Hooley Smith

Could this work?

The Mask 1972! I don't collect goalie cards and but think that would be a cool thing to see...an all retro mask set.

Since you're obviously in touch with all the folks you have signing, what about a "Tales of 1972" insert subset where you have them tell you their favorite thing that happened that year wherever they were playing, and then print that story on the card with their headshot?

along with the mask inserts i'll give this idea the thumbs up! i think it'd be a great never done before set, both new and interesting cause in my books card backs arn't as fun anymore lacking details and other fun stuff....and i know i'd collect both of em!

i also think a tough guys insert would work nicely as well, with all the rough stuff in canada '72 it'd make for some cool bloodyed up shots!

thanks, Geoff

Yeah, I think that ITG could really do justice to an Enforcer sub-set. Some good, nasty, messy hair mugshots would look great in place of a white fight strap (wink!).

The Mask set would be a necessity, I would think.

Sorry for responding the "pumping out" comment and turning this thread into a ITG/UD discussion. That was not the purpose of my comment.

I guess I was just a little sensitive about the comment.

I am going to try and have an image of the base card and the autograph card up on our website in seven days.

We have kept the 200 base card set true to the 1972 era and have our non-memorabilia inserts reflect some of your comments about Past-Present and Born in 1972.

Still have room for two more non-memorabilia insert sets, anybody?

6 annual products is fine. Frankly, I'm glad to see them. Without bashing, yours is the brand I'd prefer to purchase.

There's a small handful of 1972 events that might yield ideas for insert sets:

  • The release of The Godfather :)
  • The "member" level of the Order of Canada is created
  • Frank Calder becomes the first Native Cabinet minister in Canadian history when he is appointed to the Cabinet of British Columbia
  • December 27 death of Lester B. Pearson, Prime Minister

I left off anything pertaining to Richard Nixon or Vietnam intentionally.

I brought up the mask idea to Brian previously, but many of the players only used white masks back then... so they're not easily distinguishable from each other (other than Richard Brodeur's fleur-de-lis mask, Cheevers stitches one, etc.). I'm not sure he'd have much to work with.

LOVE the enforcers set idea!

In the NHL I think Favell had the bright Orange and wasn't until couple years later we saw painted design masks (Rutherford being the first I believe in 74)

Of course you have some iconic styles like Espo and Dryden in 72

I'll have to go through pics of others like Wayne Stephenson, Dunc Wilson, Rogie Vachon who had very unique masks

The WHA goalies had some hand painted masks and would be a great set

Here are the WHA's starting goalies from 1972-73

Whalers Smith (not from 1972 - wrong uni)

Most of these pics are from the 1972-73 season except Smith, not sure on Brodeur

I think these would be great in a Mask subset!

I'm liking this idea. Could bring a lot of attention to this set from outside the hockey card world...

I'll also nominate the mask set.
Also what about the old style team logo cards (if WHA logos are permitted).
They could even represent the decoy or redemption point cards.

Ironman, send those pics to ITG quick!!!!!!

I'd second that !!! Geoff, amazing work on some of those pics. On the flip side,I'm hoping this set is a good one as I'm looking for a new vintage themed set to dive into.Hope Dr.Price comes thru

Frank, I guess my only hesitation in investing in the idea of pop culture inclusion is the fact that the set is (tentatively anyway) called "The Year in Hockey."

That being said, I've never been good with investments, so here are some other things that could possibly be incorporated into a 1972 set:

-Watergate begins
-The Winter Olympics in Sapporo. Canada didn't participate in the hockey portion of the tourney, but guys like Tretiak, Mark Howe and Hlinka did.
-Bob Barker begins on the Price is Right :D
-The Magnavox Odyssey is released
-Munich
-Roberto Clemente goes missing after a plane crash

In the Insider's Edge, I asked Brian if he would do anything like this as part of a hockey set, and he seemed quite against the idea. This could be a landmark set, and while pop culture is cool, it IS a hockey product from a hockey company. My suggestion is to keep it focused on hockey, as there are sooooo many different spins they can do on the set to keep us finicky buyers happy.

No surprise - ITG missed the boat big time on Gordon Downie/Barilko cards. The 1972 olympics would be easy enough to incorporate into hockey. Easier than Watergate :P

How about using the Godfather and tie it in to hockey

(If Dr. Price has the license to use the font/typeface)
