2008 Cup vs. 2016 Cup

Can anybody reasonably explain to me why Price, Toews and Kane Cup cards /99 go for $1K to $1.5K, while the likes of Auston Matthews goes for $10K+. The Cup boxes went up about 50% in that time, but that doesn't explain the huge different in pricing. Thoughts?

Established vs potential...like pacman said...shiny new

No doubt Kane & Toews will get their chance at the Hall, and most likely they may be 1st or 2nd selections because of their impact on the game through stats and Stanley Cups, but hype is hype...Matthews is living up to much of it as a 1st overall pick should.

Lesson here is if you have a Matthews Cup Card sell it now and buy it again in 2026.

Those things said. I had a Price RC sold for $1K, and at the time they were going for $1K to $2K. It isn't like the ones mentioned were selling at $5K and came down to $1K, they never had the same value out of the gate.

Because all the hockey newbs since the McDavid and Matthews era are driving up the prices of cards exponentially, highly inexperienced in what value should be. Also, some of the high end Facebook razz groups (I’ve heard) inflate the hell out of eBay sales so they can razz them for ridiculous prices.

If you were to say five years ago that the YG of that kid in Erie would be $350-$400 on the regular people would think you were insane. Even Crosby YG's at the time were only like $200.

To expand off of this, I remember the prices of the S1 Young Guns cards from Price and Kane coming out at around $60USD - pretty sure that's the first fall expo I attended. By contrast, didn't Matthews start around CAD$200, drop a little, but still sustain fairly well throughout the season before spiking again around the playoffs?

We've also had back to back superstars drafted in huge hockey markets. If Kane had played in Toronto and won multiple cups there, his YG would be worth quadruple at least.

2017/18 was relatively bad for YGs, and stores are already discounting the product (at least outside of Canada they are).

That sounds about right to me. For a long time Price YG's were in the 50-60 range. Should've bought 31 of them. LOL
