With the 2010-11 NHL season now behind us and the final high-end hockey releases afoot, card companies are looking forward with forward-looking lines.

Upper Deck unveiled today a detailed report on what’s to come for retailers stocking its 2011-12 Series One Hockey line. Come November, collectors out running errands (or those doing so as an excuse to buy cards) can look find the manufacturer’s basic brand in 32-card fat packs, 8-card foil packs and 10 (plus two bonus)-pack blasters on retail shelves.

Beyond the 200-card base set, Upper Deck’s signature retail release has a few formulas worth studying this summer.

First, the fat packs:

Young Guns Rookie Cards (1:4)
UD Canvas (Regular cards – 1:2.5, Young Guns – 1:24, combined for 1:2 odds)
All-World Team (1:5)
All-World Team SP (1:40)
1950s Hockey Heroes (1:7)

1950s Hockey Heroes Art cards (1:300)
EA’s Ultimate Team (1:8)

Then, the foil:

I am cringing at the potential cost of my yearly project. I count five potential Canuck YGs: Hodgson, Tanev, Sweatt, Volpatti, Sauve. Hopefully, I escape with just 3.

I'm with ya. I dig these too. I like simplistic designs, and good shots so these look pretty good to me. They seem 'dark' though but that could just be the image/scan, etc.

UD outdid themselves in 2005-06. none of the YG designs have really done it for me ever since.

Tanev and Volpatti just had rookies in Luxury Suite. So no YG's for them...

Derek - you think a Panini producvt is going to dictate what UD does? Or are you saying a Tanev or Volpatti Young Gun would not be considered an RC, because Panini got them out htis year?

Upper Deck could still make Young Guns cards of them, but they would not be considered rookie cards.

Really sad that they are not doing another 20th Anniversary subset. I realize you can't call it a 20th Anniversary (and 21st Anniversary is cheesy)...but given the success of these parallels in 10-11, why would you NOT bring back the retro cards? Especially considering the volume of collectors whose childhoods were in the early 1990s with all the great memories!

I don't mind that they're going with something different -- you'd have to stop the program at some point. The 91-92 and 92-93 (and arguably 93-94) designs aren't so different as to be terribly distinctive from the 90-91 set, and once you get beyond that it would be tough to argue that the designs are interesting or historical at all.

Might as well try something new, and the Canvas parallels being advertised could be interesting.

You are right, those Canvas parallels should be interesting. Difficult to get a feel for them with that picture, since they just look like a normal card. But while I'm personally a bit upset with the 20th retro snub, I am quite pleased that UD is again doing a parallel set that will be challenging to build.

We'll just have to wait to see how they look come November! Can't believe that's only 4 months away.
