2012 - Draft Day predictions

I am not sure if someone has already started this, but I am interesting in hearing some of your draft day predictions. I hear the Leafs are going to try to do something crazy, but hell what do I know. But there are a lot of guys on here who have presented some interesting scenarios. Please let us hear them!!

I think the Leafs are going to do something silly like go for Rick Nash or sell the entire team to get the first two picks..ok done. Your turn..

I'd like to see the Jets move there pick this a defenceman draft and anyone at 9 won't help us for a while

I will throw short comment about my team. I don´t think Tallon will do such a makeover with the team he made last summer and I cant even remember when was the last time Florida did draft with such a low position in first round.

But I hope Tallon would make another ballsy move,something like:

To Florida Roberto Luongo
To Vancouver Rights to Garrison+Upshall (for salary reasons)+1st

Florida is rumoured to keep Markstrom in AHL for 1 more year and Theodore has 1 year left in his contract.

Run with amazing Luongo-Theodore tandem and next year bring Markstrom up with Luongo and give him slowly more playingtime ( like Schneider in Vancouver). Luongos contract won´t be a problem.

But other than Florida I think Toronto/Burke will try to make some big moves ( my spidersense tells me Nash <---> Schenn+Kadri+1st)

Also Bobrovsky to Tampa for 2nd round pick.

I think the Leafs have to make some moves. Burke has fired a coach and now all the pressure is falling on him. Fans want results, he has had enough time now to at least show some results.

IMO he has done some good things in TO dumping a pile of overpaid players who had what looked like unmovable contracts. He has also filled the cupboard with youth and draft picks, picked up a consistent 30+ goal scorer who is only 24/25 and some pieces. However its time now to see some results in the standings, this is a big year for Burke.

My Isles will select Grigerenko at 4th (or the top forward available).

Toronto will trade Schenn and 5th pick to Edmonton for the 1st pick.

Toronto will trade Kadri, Colburn, Bozak and a 2nd to Columbus for Nash and a 4th.

Flames will trade the rights to Jokinen to the Panthers for a 5th RD pick....then sign him shortly after free agency when he doesn't get a deal done with Florida.

Oh wait....Feaster is the Gm now...who knows what he'll do for my poor Flames...

Edit: in all honesty...I hope he packages something with the Flames first round pick to move in to the top 10 of the draft..... '

Or i'd love to see Jaybo traded to the Wings to replace Lidstrom....we can dream can't we? (they'll just sign Sutter for a similar contract and get a much better player then Jaybo )

I personally think it will take more then Schenn and the 5th overall pick to get Yakupov ( we know he's going first overall)

I'd say it'll cost them.....Schenn, and 2 first round draft picks ( one being the 5th overall).....

Sounds like a neat idea....we could put in the contests....maybe say this "each member gets 3 guesses" post them in the main post #1....and then go from there? Could open the floor for ideas....maybe limit it to "predict which players will be trade to where".

As we all know its VERY hard to predict the exact trade....as there are small throw ins and such...but we could use our judgement on the "main" parts of the trade?

I should probably ask the mods if this is allowed on HI. I am not sure of the rules governing this sort of contest idea. I will reach out to them.

It will take more than that to get the 1st overall pick but I hope you are right. I wouldn't mind seeing Nash in the old blue and white wither that would be awesome.

I think Edm will entertain offers for #1. They may drop a spot or two to pick Dumba or Reilly. I wouldn't be surprised if they they would entertain dropping 4 spots and hope to get Griffen Reinhart. However the Leafs may take the chance that Galchenyuk will be available to them, but I can see CBJ taking him if Yakupov is gone.

Greigorenko could free fall into the mid 1st.

My fearless predictions (lol).

1. Yakupov - huge trade by Leafs to move up. 5th overall + Kadri or Schenn or Gardiner. (the latter 2 I think would be foolish, but I think that's what Edm's price would be).
2. Galchenyuk - CBJ: To replace Nash, who still won't be traded by draft day.
3. Dumba - MTL: Too good to pass up, plus they solidify their d core to go along with Subban, Yemilen, Tinordi, Beaulieu.
4. Rielly - NYI: They have enough forwards. Need some blue chip d-men now.
5. Reinhart - Edm: Played in Edm (WHL) so their scouts had lots of time to see him.
6. Teravainen - Ana: a Finnish RW. Koivu can mentor, and Ducks hope that they can convince Selanne to come back for one more year...or two.
7. Forsberg - Minn: Good complement for Granlund and Coyle in the future.
8. I see the Hurricanes trading down with this pick. The may consider Greigorenko here, but may figure that they can get him a bit lower. But if no deals, then Greigorenko goes here.
9. Vasilevski - TB: Yzerman wants to build he goaltending via the draft. Or could be a ploy to get Luongo cheaper because he won't look so desperate.
10. Ceci - Jets: Size and scoring.
11. Jankowski - Wash: Wouldn't be surprised if Wash trades him in a package to Carolina to get the 8th pick Greigorenko.
12. Murray - Sabres: Someone to eventually complement Myers.
13. Finn - Dallas: Traded away Grossman. Need to build up d again.
14. Subban - Cal: To eventually replace Kipper.
15. Lindholm - Ott: Another Swedish dman.

If Edmonton is able to get Schenn or Gardiner and more from the Leafs, draft Reinhart, and is able to sign Justin Schultz, then I think Oil fans would be pretty pleased.

I just can't shake the 2006 draft results out of my head. The Blues drafted Erik Johnson ahead of Jordan Staal, Jonathan Toews, AND Niklas Backstrom! Two of those guys have won a Cup, and the other averages 80-90 points a year. Passing up that talent for a defenseman who's already been traded once, and isn't even the best D-man on his team. Don't get me wrong, I think Ryan Murray could be a really good player, But Yakupov has (most recently) been compared to Kovalchuk. I'm just not sold on trading a player of Yakupov's calibre, least of all for Luke Schenn, a #4/5/6 defenseman at best. The Oilers have 20 of those in their system already. Everyone is so high on Gardiner, a small (5'10" 173 lbs) defensman, and a THROW-IN from the Beachemin trade, but the Oilers need to get BIGGER, which is why I'm not sure what Gardiner would bring to the Oil. Face it Leafs fans, you don't have anything the Oilers need.

I agree with the above comment by oilerfan71. The Oilers would be nuts to trade the #1 pick to the Leafs. Other than their own first rounder, what could they seriously offer Edmonton?

I see the Sens making a big splash at the draft. They have an over abundance of NHL ready forwards in the system. They could use another top-4 D-man (I hope they take a run at Schultz) and a top-line forward (Parise or even Yakupov if they can swing a deal).

It's going to be a very interesting day. I predict a ton of trades

Jake Gardiner is 6'2" 190 at 21 years old - and is damn good.

I'm not saying they should get him or that they could get him but he is a damn good defenseman and is not (or at least will not be) undersized.

Agree 100%! I would have said him and the 5th for the 1st but do not believe the leafs will offer him.

My prediction is Burke will do jack **** during the draft and will complain after about how everybodies asking prices were too high.

I fell in love with him during the World Junior run in 2010 - Fowler and Carlson were the big guns but Gardiner was an absolute rock back there. He's never going to light up the scoresheet but he might chip in here and there but his true asset is in the defensive end.
