2016 Hobby Goals

With just days remaining in 2015, I'm looking ahead to what another year in the hobby will bring. For those of you who had hobby goals for the past year, how'd ya do? And what do you look forward to in 2016?

For myself, I had a number of goals last year...

1. Complete the Lord Stanley's Mug redemption set.

Achieved! With some help from a contact at the Spring Expo who found and personally delivered the last piece of the puzzle to Dr Price, I got the remainder of the redemption set postmarked minutes before the post office closed to receive a replica Stanley Cup autographed by Bobby Clarke.

2. Complete the Lord Stanley's Mug master set and reach 50 1/1's.

Good progress. Cut the wantlist for the main set down from 30 to 5... and blew my goal out of the water on the 1/1 front reaching 131!

3. Reach 99% completion of the Sedin PC (excluding 1/1's).

Not quite, but improved from 98.6 last year to a bit over 98.8 percent this year.

4. Look at every card in my PC and enjoy what I already have.

Utter fail, been way to busy acquiring and cataloging new cards.

5. Complete the National Treasures Greatest Signatures set.

Close, down to just Patrick Roy x/10.

6. Have Fun!

Accomplished!



Looking ahead to 2016, my goals...

1. Work on each of my PC's
- For the Sedin PC hope to hit 99 percent completion
- For the Lord Stanley's Mug PC, hope to make progress against the 5 cards left for the main master set, the 7 expired redemptions I need, and would love to add at least 7 1/1's to take me to 30 percent of the print run
- Knock the last 3 Masterpieces memorabilia cards off the wantlist, and grow the master set from almost 97% to over 98% complete
- Find the NT Patrick Roy Greatest Signatures x/10

2. Organize and enjoy my PC. Find an appropriate way to store everything, finish cataloguing it, and actually take the time to enjoy what I have before adding yet more cardboard.

3. Have fun and keep it positive!
 
I can't remember what I had for this year, but for next year two:
1) Acquire at least one of the 2015 or earlier misses of McLeod
2) Acquire all different McLeod cards released in 2016.

I did knock a few off the lists but sadly most came through other avenues. I did make a few moves on here though, maybe by 2017 I'll crack 300 :D

Goals this year are similar, just keep picking away at my want lists. Luckily I don't really have anything recent to chase so my % completed rarely ever goes down :beer:

Looks to me like you nailed it. 310 positive feedback.
Your overall feedback score is more dependent on other people than it is on yourself. You really can't help that you've developed relationships and networks within the HI Community that lead to successful deals and unique positive feedbacks that don't increase your overall feedback score.
Overall feedback score speaks to quantity or volume of deals, while individual feedback score speaks more to dealing repeatedly with certain members, satisfying relationships, a comfortable collecting community, and a quality trusted network.
That sounds like a win to me. : )

lets see here is what I said:

My Hobby Goals 2015

1) Become less dependent on eBay and use alternate channels to get what I need. That includes developing more relationships with case breakers. I love supporting Frank and his ripping at it feels more personal and helps develop greater hobby friendships. Look to join more case breaks to make trades and such.
- I think I did well here, specially for one of my lesser PC's I haven't shown yet. Frank was the big driver on it. Picking up over 60% of the cards for that player alone.

2) Keep the Henrique PC at 95% or higher while also developing patience. I have to learn that a card /35 will show many times and I don't have to jump on the first one. I got better with this as the year went on, helps the wallet big time.
- done, only jumped on anything /10 or lower right off the bat as you never know when they'll show. Also have my Henrique PC at 97.8%.

3) Keep the picking up of extra's down to a minimum. No need to dive into everything I see
- only think I really started this year was a the Team Canada Juniors PC, that's more fun then anything. And I keep those purchase's down to $20CAD or less. It has be a really rare occurrence and something I really want to make me change that. I've done a bunch of bulk buys on that. I'm also making sure I take the time to read the back of every base and parallel I pick up.


For 2016 it would be the following:
1 - Keep Henrique going and continue to have fun with it
2 - Keep supporting the breakers, without them we have nothing to purchase
3 - Don't deviate from the $20CAD rule for the Team Canada
4 - No More Player PC's outside what I already have.
5 - Have fun or stop collecting!!
 
I don't set goals, because that just contributes to the nasty OCD most associated with this hobby already have.

I just have fun, it's not a goal, it's simply what I do, I HAVE FUN. :)

I did not reply to last year's thread..... but I found a comment I made on this very topic elsewhere:

1. Keep adding to the Ranford Collection
2. Keep adding to my All Time Oilers autograph collection. I am down to just 15 names (not including guys from this year) to have a signature of every player to have ever been on the team. I would be thrilled if I could get that list down to 10 (or less!)
3. Keep adding to my UD Oilers Collection Set. Would like to pick up more of the banners, logos, and autos that I'm still missing.
4. Finish off of UD Series 1/2 Collections. That's the Series 1/2 sets from every year. I'm really close.
5. Started some other 90s master sets, would like to get closer to finishing them.
6. Do another 80s OPC set
7. No more new projects!

How did I do?

There's only a handful of 14-15 Ranford cards I did not add to my collection... haven't been able to track them down. Added more pieces from prior years too, including some big 1/1s, and some other very rare pieces (a couple of triple autos come to mind). This was a success.

All Time Oilers? I references that I was down to 15, while not including guys from that season. If I ignore this season and last, I'm missing only 5 players. There's a few managment types I'd like to add too, and I suspect they were included in the 15. I'm calling this a success though.

I kept adding to my UD Oilers Collection Set, though this has slowed down big time. Hard to find cards I still need, unless I want to pay through the nose for them (and I don't, lol)

I did finish off all of my UD Series 1/2 Collections

90s Master sets? I don't recall where exactly I was at, but I've been doing well over the past year at crossing cards off lists from different ones I've been working on.

Another 80s OPC set - Didn't do it. Oooops.

No new projects. Failed, lol. I started lots of little ones.


Goals for this year?

More Ranford stuff, for sure!

More Oilers Autos: Bob Dupuis, Mike Toal, Alex Tidey, Tommy Lehmann, Bill McDougall.
Can I cross at least two names off this list over the next 12 months? All five would be amazing.

Pick away at 94-95 Score Master Set: I need 4 Team Canada (of 24), 7 Check It (of 18), 4 The Franchise (of 26), and 5 Top Rookie Redemption Cards (the unredeemed pack inserted ones) of 10. That's a total of 20 Cards. Can I get it down to 10 (or less?)

I say this every year, but I'd like to do another 80s OPC set. Not sure which one.
 
Awesome thread idea! It's cool to see what all your goals are and what you've all achieved this year! I really enjoyed 2015 and picked up more Iginla's than any year before. I'm pretty happy with my Iggy collection that sits around 1350 different cards now. I don't look for every single card, but I'm still in search of my two biggest wants. I'm hoping to pick up any Iginla stick nameplate (either The Cup Property Of, Dominion Had It Stamped It, or ITG Stickwork Nameplates), and an NHL Shield auto 1/1 of any kind, in the year to come. Those are the two cards I've always wanted in my collection but haven't been able to grab one yet. I've decided to only pick up cards this year that I really appreciate or that I think are unique. I find I enjoy the hobby a lot more when I simplify it!

That's a fair point, I was hoping to have 300 unique though hahaha :beer:
 
Great topic. I will keep this short and sweet.

1. Get to a total of 1600 unique Patrick Roy base/inserts (currently at 1523)
2. Track down as my of my YG wants as possible
3. Acquire a Gretzky OPC RC graded 6 or higher.
4. Keep enjoying the hobby and having fun.

I can't remember my previous goals, but after returning to the hobby this year I can safely say this upcoming year will be a fun one!

Here are my 2016 Hobby Goals for the new year:

1) Improve my Enroth PC to 50% completion or higher (currently sitting around the 30% mark).

2) Trade more, Buy less.

3) Make an effort to get more involved with online forums, connect with fellow collectors, make new friends, pay it forward etc.

4) Have FUN!
 
Why not, here`s mine:

1. Get more more cards to my Ristolainen PC, hopefully get first 1/1 or shield.

2. Get my first 1/1 or Lemieux/Gretzky/Howe/Crosby auto, never owned any of these.

3. Get more cards to my Finnish players Young Guns PC

4. Start new PC


I think these are good to start, let`s see what happens!
 
Organization is the word for 2015.

1. Organize the piles of cards on my desk.
2. Get a master checklist of what I need.
3. Start a trade list
4. Learn how to scan and post
5. Bulk lot out my inserts and maybe try COMC
6. Be an active member on HI!

HAVE FUN.

I'm done playing the lottery. I'll try boxes here and there but I'm not looking to add anything shiny that I really have no interest in. I'm making a full return to finding enjoyment in the hobby and I'm going to continue to look for flips to fund it fully.
 
I'm at the 50% mark for my 13-14 BGS 10 Graded Young Gun set for series 1 (MacKinnon set)
2016 Goal = track down 25 more BGS 10 YGs that I need :)

My hobby goals

1. Doing more buying and selling. Last year I kind of took a hiatus as I was so busy with work. I truly enjoy the art of a deal, keeping what I like and selling off the rest. Flipping is fun. I believe someone else said it here too but I am too lazy to go back up and find it.

2. Continue to re-tool the eBay store. I have had a lot of fun with this, in that I have tried different things to see if they help with sales. Some do and some don't, but for the most part, I am doing well enough to keep it going.

3. Wax by case. This will likely be the way I go forward if I want to bust wax. I used to enjoy boxes but cases are so much more fun. I will be extremely picky and will likely grab older wax as the new stuff is priced beyond reason in my opinion. With another baby on the way, it makes less sense to play the high stakes lottery when the economy is feeling the hurt.

4. Supreme sets. I will still chase these but I will stay within my budget. I made it a rule that I will not pay more than X for a supreme card. So far I have acquired a boatload of them well under my budget per card rule. If the card is selling for more than I think its worth, meh, I don't need it that badly. As I always say, if cards cause me stress, it ain't a hobby and I am outta here.

5. Wendel Clark PC. Trimmed down to very select cards. Again, staying in budget with this as well. I enjoy the other aspects of life too, why blow it all on cards.

6. Group breaks. I am at a point where I am done with them. I hate losing money to begin with and I hate even more the fact that I will potentially walk away with a ****ty base card as my hit. Kudos to those who love to gamble but after years of buying and selling, it makes super less sense to do Gb's.

7. Expo, Keep retooling and learning the trade. Meeting new collectors and building more friendships.

8. Continue to be positive. I can't stand negativity. You all may have noticed it in my commentary but life is way to precious to be angry or negative or spiteful. I will continue to love the hobby and reinforce the non drama aspect of it. I don't understand the logic of wanting to ***** all the time or troll ****. I have no time to waste on that garbage and nor do i need to make myself feel better by putting others down. My goal is to spread the fun aspect of this card board addiction. 'Nuff said.

9. Buy metal display cases. yes, I want the metal ones with glass but for some bloody reason I can't find one within a reasonable price range.

10. Enjoy life. Yup, that is a goal I have achieved a million times over. I will make it a goal to do it again.
