The Montreal Canadiens have acquired forward Max Domi from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Alex Galchenyuk.

Marc Bergevin will not be happy until he completely destroys the Habs fanchise.

We need goal scoring, so we trade a guy who actually scores for somebody who couldn’t score if the opposition net was left empty and the other team had left the ice. Domi is a plug like his old man was. But at least Tie Domi filled a need when he was on the ice.

lol. Max isn't as bad as his dad. Max is skilled, but Galchenyuk is more skilled. Bergevin had to get something because Gally wasn't fitting in Julien's system of plumbers, and will be a UFA in 2 years (and most likely not re-signing).

The trade was to save some salary and also get a few more years before Max wants to bolt from the franchise too.

From a skill and upside potential POV, Arizona totally won.

I agree that Arizona appears to have won this trade, but time will tell? I think the trade will benefit both players, and a change of scenery will hopefully be a win/win for both players, and teams.

I’m not sure. Domi was great in the wjc. Guy has potential and has played solid. Not as skilled but I think the intangibles might be greater with Domi!

I agree. He can't be compared to his dad. Different kind of player.

I think the change of scenery will perhaps benefit both. I think for the time being, this deal helps the Coyotes more.

Domi has to be elated to be out of the desert and going to an original 6 team.
I look for bigger things from Max in Montreal. We'll have to see how Galchenyuk works out in Arizona, personally I believe he is over rated.
Dan.

I agree that he is highly over rated.....but he did score 4 empty net goals last year

Its the 2018-19 off season? Already? I missed an entire year of hockey?

Who wins the Cup in 2019 so I can go to Vegas and pull a Biff!

Assuming you meant 2017-18 off-season thread?

No one is talking about the Sabres trading Hudson Fasching to the Yotes?

I am most interested to see what happens with JT, and if the Sabres actually do trade Ryan O'Reilly.

I’m so out of the loop on NHL gossip, mostly because I just wait for things to actually happen so I can discuss rather than wasting my energy waiting with “what if’s?”.

That said, I had no idea trading ROR was a current possibility? What’s up with that? Dude is the Sabres best all-round player? But again, I’m out of the loop and honestly know nothing about the Sabres except they have the first pick in the draft.

There are a lot of rumors swirling but those rumors are now turning into more "real possbilities" as the guys at TSN put it.

Sabres would trade him to get scoring on the wing, because we now have "too much" talent down the middle which I think is a load of BS. They think that with Mittelstadt coming up, it's going to be him & Eichel with #1C and #2C. Also it seems we wouldn't mind moving his $7.5mm Cap hit to free up some space.

My personal opinions:

1. O'Reilly brings too much to the table to move him. The guy is a minute eater, a monster on the PK, one of the better all around players in the league a lesser Toews/Kopitar IMO. He's the guy who does everything and I think we won't realize that until he's gone.

2. If we're trying to ditch salary, there's so much garbage dead weight on this team making millions, but Botterill doesn't want to use buyouts to avoid penalties in the future which I understand, but we are paying some guys ridiculous money to not do much.
Okposo ($6mm) - Not the same since his health issues, hope he can turn it around.
Pominville ($5.6mm) - Had to take him back to get Scandella, only signed 1 more year so life goes on
Moulson ($5mm) - We literally paid him to go play for someone elses AHL team last year. Stuck on the books for another year.
Bogosian ($5.1mm) - Closest he's been to a full season is 64 games for us. Last year played 18. Signed for 2 more years at 5.1 is my candidate to buyout, there's no room to pay him that with the other people we have. Our D is too log jammed with talent to waste money and space on him.

*IF* we draft Dahlin which you would assume we will, we will have:

Ristolainen
McCabe
Dahlin
Scandella
Beaulieu
Bogosian

Not to mention we just signed Pilut to an entry level deal out of Sweden and have Nelson/Guhle who look like they can make the jump.

3. I don't think the value we end up getting back for O'Reilly is going to represent the value he gives to the team. That's a lot of eggs into the Mittelstadt basket without knowing too much about how he performs in the NHL. I think he will be a great player but wouldn't you want O'Reilly around to mentor him and ease the pressure on the kid? We shall see but I'm hoping if they actually do trade him, it better be something worthwhile in return.

In short, my reply to this is:

I think O'Reilly is one of the top 10 two-way centers in the NHL and extremely underrated. He has played in relative anonymity in Colorado and Buffalo as opposed to the big cities/markets like New York or Chicago.

IF the Sabres trade him I think they are just continuing their eternal 1 step forward, 3 steps back approach to building a contender.

Hat tip to John Chayka for recognizing a rube in Bergevin and scoring a player with sky-high potential for a middle six at best forward.

Even bigger kudos to San Jose and Florida for smelling blood in Ottawa - Florida gets some added offence allowing them to make some moves, San Jose gets a bunch of picks and Ottawa gets a bad contract and will still probably lose Karlsson this season.
