Verified Trader ,
Greetings, all. Been a little while since the last show, hasn't it? When I last left you, I was showing off this bundle of joy:
(WARNING: GRATUITOUS, BLATANT REHASH AHEAD)
16/17 SP Game Used Game Gear NHL Legends #GGLM Larry Murphy 3/3 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
Believe it or not, I've actually sold more than I've bought over the past few months, by a fair margin. Some of it was PC, some was not. A few of those sales were made right here on HI, but the majority have come on Ebay. That's right - after years of purchases on there, I decided to try my hand at selling. I didn't want to, but when the sales weren't finding me here, I felt I had no choice but to take my act to the bigger market.
Things started out slowly for me there too, but I've since started to get the hang of it. I stuck with it, showing the same dogged determination I used to piece my PC together, and the sales have been coming. I haven't exactly torn apart the foundation of my collection, but I've made a conscious decision to prioritize some cards over others in an effort to gain some financial flexibility. Have I accomplished that? Well...no, not really. Kinda hard to achieve that when you sell cards at a loss. I'll never correct all my mistakes, but I feel that if I can continue on this path and keep being smarter and more discriminating with my purchases, results will show themselves over time.
So yes, I'm still making some purchases too. Reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated. The past few months haven't quite brought a haul the likes of which I was known for when anything and everything was on my wantlist, but I still landed some stuff worth showing. With that being said, let's get you caught up to speed:
16/17 Ultimate Hockey Ultimate Dual Signatures Red Spectrum #US203 Joe Mullen/Larry Murphy 2/3 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
This one was floating around on Ebay for a while with a BIN I wasn't prepared to pay. But I kept it on my watch list because you never knew if they would lower the price or not. One day I was looking at it randomly and noticed that the price hadn't changed, but the card itself had changed to a BIN/OBO. I figured if I could get it for half the BIN, that would put it in my wheelhouse, even with the expensive shipping from the US. So I tried, and I did.
16/17 Metal Lords of Hockey Black #LHLM1 Larry Murphy 2/4 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
My chase of 16/17 Leaf Metal began with this Ebay pickup from HI's own mgiuseffi1969...
16/17 Metal Lords of Hockey #LHLM1 Larry Murphy /10 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
...which was followed by this Ebay pickup from HI's own S4Kh4r0v John. I had made him an offer on Ebay for it which went unanswered and expired, so I followed up on here to see if he had wanted to deal off Ebay. He apologized profusely for missing my communication, giving me a very fair deal on this one, plus this plate:
16/17 Ultimate Hockey Ultimate Signature Memorabilia Printing Plates Magenta #SMLM1 Larry Murphy 1/1 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
which I had remembered him pulling from Leaf Ultimate last year when I had my hobby reality check. Thanks a lot, John.
15/16 ITG Final Vault Decades 1990s Game Used Jerseys Silver #M20 Larry Murphy Blue 1/1 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
I remember this card selling as part of a much larger Vault lot on Ebay some months back, and I was unable to justify the purchase price for one measly card, so I let it be. Like they say though, most everyone comes around again. I don't make Vault cards a priority anymore, but when this was listed separately and I won it for $2...why not?
16/17 SP Authentic Sign of the Times #SOTTLM Larry Murphy by primetimepawich, on Flickr
Sellers were looking to cash in on these out of the gate, so I waited until I found one listed at standard auction with a low starting bid. I won it for my max bid, but still...I won it, right?
00/01 Upper Deck Exclusives Tier 2 #294 9/25 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
I don't usually bother with base cards in my show threads, but I'll make some exceptions to pad the numbers. My collection is such that older base and parallels I need are hard to come by now. When I saw this on COMC the other day, I eventually clued in that this was one. That same day, I loaded some money into my COMC account to make an offer on it. For a seller with the username "Collectandsave", I certainly didn't do much saving on it. They would only accept an offer a whopping 75 cents less than their asking price. But I'd never seen one and figured I may never again, so I bit the bullet.
16/17 SP Game Used Supreme Patches #PALM Larry Murphy 11/15 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
Because I'm a sucker for these. And because until/unless Sedinfan Dave's Lord Stanley's Mug Mega Patches show up, these are the definitive Murphy patch cards out there right now.
16/17 Metal Lords of Hockey Super #LHLM1 Larry Murphy 1/1 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
When Leaf Metal came out with their autographs and I had easy success on the first one /4, I thought the bar had been set on them. I thought wrong. Other people are bidding on these and winning - people who aren't me. I vowed not to go all in on them because after all, they are parallels of parallels. Same for the above card, until HI's resident Turco collector Tim spoke from experience and sold me on the quality of the gold super prismatics. If these were the definitive Leaf Metal autographs to have out of the rainbow and looked so cool in person, I wanted to see for myself and figured I could make an exception. I upped my bid and brought it home. Did it live up to the hype? I'd say it looks pretty sweet, but damned if I can think of a way to display it that truly does it justice. With its finish, a traditional holder does not.
16/17 Upper Deck Day with The Cup Flashbacks #DCF4 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
Wanted one of these since release, but they kept going for crazy money so I knew I'd have to be patient. I was keeping tabs on a few on Ebay and a few on COMC, hoping one would go on sale and end up in my wheelhouse. There was one copy on COMC that kept bouncing around between different sale percentages and getting close. When I loaded the money for the 00/01 UD Tier 1 /25, I strategically loaded enough so I'd have the credit to pull the trigger if this copy hit a certain sale percentage. Today it did, and I'm a man of my word.
Sticking with the Cup theme...
When I saw this card listed on the SP Authentic checklist, I knew I would want one sight unseen. I'm all about the autographs, and this one would fill a niche I didn't have in my card PC - an inscription. If my goal is to focus on the story of Larry Murphy's career with my PC, this card fits the bill by celebrating his 4 greatest accomplishments in the sport.
I give you:
16/17 SP Authentic Sign of the Times Inscribed #SOTTLM Larry Murphy /15 by primetimepawich, on Flickr
Paid more than I would've liked to, but it was still the cheapest of the 3 copies to sell on Ebay so far. And with only 15 stated copies, I knew copies might be hard to come by once the product dries up and makes way for the next flavor. So I decided it was in my best interest to act fast, and I guess time will tell if I was right or not.
Thanks for the look, and comments always welcome. Also, you are all free to look at my site and let me know if there is anything you need or are interested in. Certain cards I would like to keep and build around, at least for now, but I'm more than willing to relocate others if you can give them a good home where they're appreciated.
Thanks a lot
Joe Pawich
