I'm not a graded guy, but to me there should be one standard, and only one. Grading is supposed to be a consistent way of proving the condition of a card. Kind of throws the whole concept out the window if they have different rules for different situations.
That ship has already sailed. Not all cards are judged to the same standard. Just look at the Gretzky OPC rough cut. Such a rough cut would not be tolerated on a modern card or even other cards of that era, but the $1.3M PSA10 Gretzky RC shows it. In fact it is sought after by collectors since the absence of the rough cut could mean it was sheet cut.
The round cut Lafreniere (and I apologize for putting Gretzky and Lafreniere in the same sentence!) is much like the Gretzky where a common artifact of the manufacturing process is being considered as an acceptable deviation from the sharp corner standard of most modern cards.
