As some of you know, I am a pretty dedicated CFL collector. So when Pacific started making CFL cards back in 2003 - I went pretty hard at it. I've done master sets of the 2003 set, and was one of the first people to complete a master set of 2003 Atomic, considering how tough the gold parallel set was to assemble. Unfortunately it was also a considerable outlay - so when Pacific went belly up and all the cheap wax made its way to market - that hurt.
In 2004, I also cracked the CFL wax pretty hard - that was at $100/box. As the wax came down in price, I would find boxes at $50, $40, $30 and eventually see them settle around $20/box. I had never seriously considered putting this set together, given some of the prices that were realized for the multi-colour pieces - and they were considerably pricey, as I didn't have the wherewithal to compete with the uber-hard core collectors. But as I ripped cheaper wax, I would get a piece here and there, until it stalled for about a year. Now Pacific was not exactly very good with creating ANY multi-colour jersey pieces, so whenever they were up for grabs - they were not cheap. And with the appearance of the cheap wax, the only things from this set to hold their value are the autographs and any multi-colour pieces.
Fast forward - I would find a lot of help here on HI. The key to this set was getting word that Greg (g-force) had pulled a 2 colour Anthony Calvillo jersey. As the toughest SP of the set, it was hard enough to come by, and I have only heard of one other instance of a multi-colour Calvillo, pulled by gamebreakers. Given the prices of the other multi-colours I had seen, I was braced for a hit to the wallet that would hurt most folks here. But great as he has been over the years, Greg was more than reasonable in helping me and we worked out a very equitable trade.
Then came Kevin (kmitchel) - he had a Hervey jersey. He generously offered it to me for my set, and I thank him very much for that - that has been the only one I have seen personally.
Finally comes the final piece of the puzzle. Darren (dahabsfan) had ripped a considerable amount of 04 CFL along with Greg when the cheap boxes were readily available. Now the running joke between us is that whenever he rips something, he usually pulls something that will always cause me to hate him even more than I had before. So I've known of the last pieces for quite awhile, and Darren was kind enough to send them out to me this week. Now keep in mind - Darren has claim to at least one, possibly two vital internal organs until I can repay the favour - either in the form potent potables or a very shiny 1/1 Beliveau or Habs piece that he might not be able to find - in other words, I expect to lose a kidney at some point...
So without further ado, here it is, one of the possible handful of 04 Pacific CFL multi-colour jersey sets...
I am always still looking for upgrades, so if you have any to offer, please drop me a line.
