$50 shipping charge!!

I just got a card in the mail...correction my wife just phoned and blasted me that she had to pay $50 for shiping on a card. I have no idea how shipping could be that much?? The card was $165 and it was sent from S.D. to winnipeg (2-3 hours away across the border)....I can't wait to get home see how this happened/ cost is broken down. I have a feeling the seller made me pay for the shipping and used UPS.....this seems outragous to me........$50!!! I know it was sent with tracking as well!!! I am pissed I haev never seen that kind of shipping charge!

Didn't you ask how much it would cost for shipping? I never bid or buy before finding out the shipping cost. Some of it could be duty fees for crossing the boarder. It will be interesting to see the breakdown.
 
it might not be the seller charging you. it sounds like it was sent UPS and they hit you up for the customs and brokerage charges. was the UPS brokerage charge ever that absurd though?
 
I had a deal on SCF with a guy and he was to pay for everything (shipping included in the price). I can't wait to go home and get blasted by the boss.......I am ready to spit fire right now...I have never EVER heard of $50 dollars this is outrageous...........there's probably no way to go after the guy either.

My guess would be the seller put a high value on the card and customs nailed you on it, handling and GST. (Been there, bought that).
 
its the brokerage charge you could have rejected and ask to broker it yourself ,the card and it would have gone back to the UPS depo i think its on king edward or route 90 and it would have cost you about 12.00

Was it an expensive card? It sounds to me like you got hit for customs fees, which is based on the stated value of the contents of the package.

BTW thats why I'm gone from SCF nothing but problems
 
The charges could be custom fees, if it is then the seller has no control over that. The only thing he could have done was mark it as a gift with a low value. Even then customs can still open it and put a value on it if they think the listed value is wrong.

Please watch your language. This is a family site, I have edited your first 2 post to make them a little more appropriate. I only removed the abbreviations that had to be removed. Next time I will have to issue a warning.

I highly doubt it was the Seller's doing. Most likely the brokerage fees charged by the courier based on the declared value listed, this of course would also not be the Seller's fault. If UPS was used, then the charges sound about right, they're atrocious and I personally refuse to buy anything from the US that requires UPS shipping.
 
I'm going home at lunch to get to the bottom of this......I'm still furious.....I have a feeling you guys are right about the brokerage....Jeesh. Ahhh what are you going to do!! I feel sick.........

There's no such thing as "customs fees". It's provincial and federal sales tax. In addition to that UPS charges a brokerage fee as several people have mentioned. If the seller marked the value as $165 then it should be $19.80 in taxes (12% sales tax in Man.) and $30.20 in brokerage which sounds about right (and completely absurd) for UPS.

UPS is on a hot streak of late outright stealing from people with their bogus "brokerage" fees.

I bought an item from NY off their website two weeks ago. I paid 68 bucks for the item and 25 bucks for shipping. UPS shows up at my door asking for a 35 dollar brokerage fee. (Item's correct value was on the customs form)

Outright theft.
 
Simplest solution is to refuse the package (it will be returned to sender) and file either a Paypal or CC claim for item not received.
 
Here's how it breaks down:
GST/HST - $11.07
Brokerage Fee - $39.10
Brokerage GST/HST (Yes they had the gull to tax their service) - $1.95
for a grand total of $52.12

What a bunch of crooks, I wish I would have intercepted it to do the brokerage myself...anyway to recover the $39 at this point?
 
Email the seller, I just had this happen and they refunded me the amount ( $40 ), as I did not state that I wanted my item shipped UPS which they did.
Handle it in a professional way and dont let it sicken you until the seller say's no to the refund.
Only way to make your money back is you can say your unhappy with the card and want your money back and live without the card.
 
This is me not understanding how taxation works...but how does UPS have the right to charge HST on an item they aren't actually selling to you that is technically your own property that they're merely transporting to you for which you're already paying a fee for? (I'm talking the card itself in my silly run-on sentence there)

it was a private sale over on another site..I highly doubt he will go for it. I will try none the less though.
 
Ups only charged hst on their brokerage fees. UPS by the way is the most crooked cross border delivery service you could ever use. I sometimes think it would be cheaper to get a taxi to bring parcels across for me. Use only USPS for cross border packages.
