I searched through and (surprisingly) could not find a thread regarding the confusing variations to the 96-97 Pinnacle base set. So, here's one!

Beckett lists five versions:

1) base
2) Premium Stock
3) Foil
4) Rink Collection
5) Artist's Proof

I'm looking for pictures and/or good descriptions of the different versions. The latter two are the easiest to tell.

Rink Collection: Full-dufex card front, bright gold "card bottom" foil.
Artist's Proof: Regular card stock card front, holographic gold "card bottom" foil with the words Artist's Proof.

However, the other three are a bit nebulous. All cards contain some degree of foil along the card bottom. I've seen versions with gold foil, silver foil, and one with a full foil (flat finish) card front. What I don't understand is:
1) Which version is which...
2) If each "parallel" set runs across the entire print of the product...
3) If there's any differences in card stock thickness...

Any help?

Premium Stock is just that - heavier stock with a diff-coloured trim. Foil board is the same stock as that. The rinks are dufexed, and the AP's have the rainbow foil highlighting.

Thanks Brett! I guess the key to base vs. premium stock is that base has gold foil and premium stock has silver foil.

I own an absolute ton of premium stock commons, so I know they aren't that tough to find -- but I always just assumed that was the regular version. Now I know!

No problem Andy. I can see how having a lot of the premium stock would create the confusion.

Glad I could help.
