97-98 pinnacle press plates

ive heard some people say that these are the more sought after press plates.
i was wondering if anyone knows why? and if this is actually true.

Probably. They were, I believe, the first PPs available in the packs (or was it 96-97?), at least from a licensed company.

A huge number of Pacific plates flooded the market for a variety of reasons, reasons which some will swear as fact though they contradict each other. Pacific also released a lot of plates in a framed set with all 4 and a "special" 1/1 (basically the card with a stamp on it), so people bought those and split the set up. The Pacific ones typically go for a fraction of the cost of others. Check out eBay seller "gbahead" as he always seems to have a new batch each week.

Aside from Pacific, UD has really overdone it with plates in The Cup, where some rookies could easily have more than a dozen plates floating around. They still release plates for the base UD product, usually in series 2 of that each year.

Topps also did it with Pristine, and maybe some others. But the originals go back to Pinnacle.

I'd argue that there should be a slight premium on Pinnacle slightly only for the "neato" factor, but not nearly as much as some others. I know JF over on Beckett tried to sell me a Jagr Pinnacle plate one for $325. I said no thanks.

Actually, that's less outlandish (for JF) than it was even two years ago.

The Pinnacle Press Plates were indeed the first pack-inserted in the hockey hobby. Later, Pacific would try to make theirs available by direct auction - that got shut down hard by the NHL and NHLPA over licensing interpretation. A fair quantity still made it onto the market through a variety of routes. Later they went the framed set route and devalued the market horribly.

ITG has been flirting with the idea as well.
