Every year around this time I take a peek at the Allen and Ginter breaks around the web and wonder why no one has taken a shot with something similar with hockey. I understand that there's the tradition of the A&G brand associated with baseball, but something different like this could be interesting if executed correctly. A blend of nostalgia, pop culture, history, and hockey would be a fun change from the standard releases and formats. Sure, it takes a lot of work and planning, but think of the possibilities...

UD already has Goodwin to do that - plus with the cap on releases per year by the PA - there is enough names in the stable that some products do get cut and others get revived after an absence.

It was sort of done with Champ's in 08-09 and 09-10 and didn't really work out that well despite the fact that my brother and I loved it.

Not sure if it would fly that well for a hockey card product.

I just ordered a box of Allen & Ginter baseball , because it's different and I have been bored of hockey products lately , suppose to be here tomorrow .. see how it goes lol

I've always considered Goodwin more of a Sportkings style release that focuses on sports from all over. I guess I was thinking of a more hockey-centric set with the oddballs and offshoot sets surrounding it. I have always found A&G to be aesthetically very pleasing and with a couple of exceptions like Series 1, many of the sets tend to get stale after a while. Maybe the retro look of A&G is why I always find myself drawn to OPC every year.

Panini tried a Fans of the Game concept in one of their sets (Pinnacle?) but I don't think it worked out as well as people intended simply because nobody wants to collect Justin Bieber's autograph

I love Allen and Ginter. I love Goodwin Champions. I love Pop Century etc etc. I just don't think the idea flies very well in hockey. Champs was an excellent concept that seemed to go over really well in the first year and poorly in the second. While I was disappointed that it was discontinued, I wasn't surprised.

I don't know what the thing is with hockey collectors in general. Do we just not like things out of our comfort zone?

The hockey sector is a unique breed. There's very little that has had success in other sports that carries over to hockey products. For as small a part of the hobby we are, we are also the neediest bunch by far.

The most noticeable thing to me is the lack of set/team collectors. Hockey tends to be very much broken down into specific player or hot rookie collectors for the most part. After dabbling in other sports more and more over the past couple years it is surprising how many people put together sets and/or team collections. That is the key to a lot of products success in the other sports.

I actually think thats the opposite, far more team based collectors in hockey than the others...baseball is largely vintage and rc collectors, football seems more player based and basketball has all sorts of both but largely player based as well

I just don't see it in my dealings. 9 times out of 10 when I make a deal in other sports the convo at some point gets a "got any Steelers cards?" or "working on XXX set". Just have a way easier time moving filler/base/inserts across other sports than with hockey.

Trying to deal in hockey now results in the same old "I only collect Nikolai Borschevsky and I have 13 of his 14 issued cards. Will only trade for him." or
"Only looking for new high end rc's" almost every single time.

No Nikolai Borschevsky fans were targeted or harmed in the making of this post. Name is for illustration purposes only. :D

I bought a few packs of A&G today and was surprised to pull a Jeremy Roenick jersey card. It is nice to see Topps producing a hockey card.

Champs was along these lines.... I did make a point to put together a set of the "Historical Figures" (USA Presidents, CAN Prime Ministers). Lots of animals, and fossil redemption cards too.

I don't think that stuff ever went over very well with the the "mainstream" of hockey collectors though. "Why is there a picture of a dinosaur in with my picture of hockey men?" was a common complaint at the time.
