A Guide to the Autographs of the Early 90s

Nice article. Star Pics (I guess they are/were considered a trading card company) has some interesting autos from its 1991 release. Looks like also they had a small run in 1992 (collegiate sports and non sports) and then went kaput. Most valuable appears to be the Brett Favre, but quite a few hockey players included. Almost all the hockey were heavily airbrushed to get rid of all team logos, etc.

Yes, Star Pics and its "CardArt". I recently acquired a set of its 1991 Prospects and when I opened the box, the cards were sealed together as a brick. There was no pulling them apart without destroying them all. So I destroyed them all...and no autograph! :)

There's definitely a post to be done about the autos in these unlicensed companies, but I'm not the guy to do it. I didn't collect them and have no knowledge base to even start from.

I know of someone who opened 4 cases of the stuff back in 91 hoping to find that very card.

There’s an ad I’ve seen at shows that promoted a dual auto of Bobby Orr and Eric Lindros for 1991 Score that was supposed to be made but never saw the light of day. That would have been an amazing card at the time.

A Locker All-Stars Howe autograph sold over the weekend on eBay. I didn't bid because the card was a little more dinged up than I'd like, and it looks like the autograph has faded a bit. Still, someone nabbed a legit Howe autograph for $20.

Notice the hologram on the back of the autographed card is a diamond, compared to the rectangle/oval hologram on the back of the normal header card in the last picture.

Since putting together this thread, I have managed to acquire two of these autos.

Alexandre Daigle - As expected, when this card popped up, it didn't break the bank. I got a French version.

Gordie Howe - Armed with the knowledge that a diamond hologram distinguished the card from an in person auto, I found and purchased once for just $40, which I thought was pretty good for a certified Gordie Howe. Thanks again to TADon'tAsk for this valuable information.
