It is no secret that up there with Arturs Irbe, my other favorite hockey player of all-time is Levente Szuper. Being the first Hungarian born and raised player to ever make it onto an NHL roster is a huge accomplishment and as a dual Canadian-Hungarian citizen myself, I naturally gravitated towards being a fan of his many, many years ago.
So here it is, my fourth Levente Szuper worn jersey!
What you are looking at right now is a 2003-04 Peoria Rivermen ECHL jersey utilized by Levente Szuper. It features heavy pilling, but light wear otherwise. It is signed by him on the rear number, and though there is personalization to a former owner (PS, don’t ever get a jersey personalized if you plan on selling it in the future) it is easily hidden by turning the jersey around. Also pictured is the updated Szuper shrine featuring an Ottawa 67s practice jersey of his, a 2000-01 Saint John Flames gamer of his, today's jersey, a 2003-04 Worcester Ice Cats gamer of his, a game used stick of his, and a bunch of other collectible stuff of his.
Born on June 11, 1980 in Budapest, Hungary, Levente Szuper was drafted 116th overall by the Calgary Flames in 2000. Despite experience in a Dallas Stars training camp prior to being drafted, Szuper turned pro in 2000-01 and his career lasted until 2012-13, seeing him play throughout Europe, the CHL, ECHL, AHL, and very nearly the NHL. Despite never getting into NHL action, Szuper was the dressed backup for the Calgary Flames in 8 games from November 5th to December 3rd, 2002, effectively making him the first ever (and thus far, only) Hungarian born and raised player to ever be on an active NHL roster. His NHL experience took place exclusively in 2002-03.
Among his career accolades include winning the Memorial Cup (1999), winning the AHL Calder Cup (2001), and representing Team Hungary in many IIHF tournaments.
