Verified Trader ,
Hey all from Joe Pawich. Well, if I thought I was getting a break after my Larry Murphy Cup pickups a few months back, I couldn't have been more wrong. With the release of Forever Rivals, I added 9 new card variations to my wantlist and have been working diligently to pick away at them ever since. It's been a pretty good run, so let's share the fruits of my labor.
Warning: to all my fellow Toronto Maple Leaf haters, please be advised that there is an abundance of blue and white in this post. It's unfortunate, but when you collect Larry Murphy, you take what you get - Maple Leafs cards included.

00/01 Pacific Printing Press Plate Back Larry Murphy 1/1
Unexpected 1/1s are great. Unxepected 1/1s under $10 are even better. When this popped up, I had to have it. From the same seller I got this one from a few months previously:
Great to put the 2 together. Of course, if the seller had responded to me earlier and just confessed that he had this back as well, I would've been happy to keep the pair united right from the start.
12/13 ITG Forever Rivals Game-Used Jersey Gold #M-12 Larry Murphy /10
First one to hit the Bay, and my first foray into Forever Rivals. Paid more than I probably should've when I ran into a Leafs collector trying to fill a Murphy niche in his collection. Of course, I could've been patient and let the first one go, but when dealing with cards /10 or under, I sometimes figure it's best to pay the piper and not be left with hat in hand in case other copies aren't quick (or ever) to emerge.
12/13 ITG Forever Rivals Game-Used Patch Blue #M-12 Larry Murphy /6
I tried befriending the troublesome collector, letting them know I'm a Murphy collector who just wanted to get in and get what I needed, then I would be glad to step aside and let them get the spoils with zero difficulty from me. Unfortunately, that was after he bid me up on this one too. C'est la vie.
12/13 ITG Forever Rivals Game-Used Jersey Silver #M-12 Larry Murphy /30
Again, the first copy of this variation to hit the Bay, and I liked that the 2-color GU mirrors the previous Gold version.
12/13 ITG Forever Rivals Game-Used Jersey Blue #M-12 Larry Murphy /130
From a case break from HI's own JonX. The easiest of Murphy's Rivals cards to get, thus the one I was in no hurry to get. I was holding out for a nice 2-color copy, but to date, all the copies I've seen so far have all been plain 1-color whites. After losing out on a few on Ebay, I figured I'd deal through HI when the opportunity came up and I saw this in Jon's case break thread. I'm still game to upgrade if I ever find one, but until then, this works as a placeholder.
12/13 ITG Forever Rivals Game-Used Patch Silver #M-12 Larry Murphy /3
One of my most recent pickups. This was listed as /6, which I already had, but the scan of the back of the card clearly listed it as a Silver, which is /3 - and which I needed. That Leafs collector got in on the bidding on this one too, but gave me less competition than on the patch /6, so I guess that's a win for Joe.
12/13 ITG Forever Rivals Stick Rack #SR-33 Larry Murphy /10
Took a while after the initial release for a Murphy Stick Rack to pop up on the market. I was looking forward to seeing one, and this one didn't disappoint. Again, I paid more than I should've, as patience probably would've won the day for me. But it was a nice copy and I wanted to lock it down rather than look at it in my Watch List forever.
12/13 ITG Forever Rivals Franchises Gold #F-05 Felix Potvin/Wendel Clark/Doug Gilmour/Larry Murphy/Mike Gartner/Todd Gill 1/1
When I saw the initial checklist for Forever Rivals, this one was #1 with a bullet on my wishlist. But given the heady company on this card, I thought it might be more of a pipe dream. I know Potvin, Clark, Gilmour and even Gartner have their own followings here on HI - open it up to the world on Ebay, and it would be easy to shoot me down. I was excited when this popped up, and pledged to come hard after it. Made an offer that night and was countered by the seller the next morning. It was somewhere in between what I hoped I might have to pay and what I thought I might have to pay. This card was getting a lot of views and a couple offers aside from my own, so I knew I couldn't nickel-and-dime it. I knew if I didn't pay, someone would, so I bit the bullet and was thrilled to add it to the fold.
12/13 ITG Forever Rivals Franchises Silver #F-05 Felix Potvin/Wendel Clark/Doug Gilmour/Larry Murphy/Mike Gartner/Todd Gill /9
With the Gold intact, I wanted a Silver copy as a companion piece. I knew what I paid for the gold and wanted an appropriate price range for a version out of 9. This proved difficult when running up against other player collectors, but finally, the 4th time was a charm and I got this one for a price I decided I could live with.
12/13 ITG Forever Rivals Redemption Silver #FEFR-14 Larry Murphy/Mark Recchi 19/19
Thought I was nearing the end? Me too, but with the arrival of the Expo came 2 new redemption cards to add to my list (4 in total - a Gold and Silver variation of each). This was the first one to drop. I made the seller an offer and quickly grabbed it for a reasonable price.
12/13 ITG Forever Rivals Redemption Silver #FEFR-38 Doug Gilmour/Larry Murphy/Guy Carbonneau/Kirk Muller /19
This was the other one. I made an offer on the first copy of this card to drop, but when the seller countered with double my offer, I knew we weren't on the same page and shifted my focus elsewhere. I landed this copy not long after for less than the offer I'd made on that first copy. Advantage - Joe.

Seller listed this one at a higher range than I was comfortable with and wasn't quick to counter or give me something to work with. The downside of 1/1 cards that aren't listed in standard auctions are that you're at the mercy of the seller. I had to have it and didn't have another option. Eventually the seller replied to my inquiry and let me know the range they were looking for. I wasn't thrilled with it, but bit the bullet and made it work.

Have to break from the Leafs colors to give a shout-out to HI's own "chihawk19" Mike for his help landing this one. I liked the colors, but the seller, while otherwise pleasant to deal with, wouldn't ship to Canada. Mike was quick to answer my request for help and served as a conduit to get this card to me. He never even asked for anything for his help (though I did give a couple bucks for his trouble). Mike's database of past Ebay sales has been a help to me in trying to chase down cards on my wishlist that would otherwise be dead ends. He's a valuable member of the HI community, but lately it seems the hockey card gods aren't rewarding him and others aren't returning the favor. He's had a run of bad luck. HI's supposed to be a community of helping. One of the best parts of this site is seeing the completed projects of others and the joy they get in sharing them. Mike is on the verge of some but has come up against a brick wall. I hope those who could help him start paying it forward so he can get his just desserts.
And I will end with this one:
08/09 ITG Superlative Franchise Famous Fabrics Nameplate #NP56 Larry Murphy H 1/1
You may remember my near-miss with the 08/09 ITG Superlative Leafs Murphy Stick Rack. Well, the guy who sold that offline to HI's LSOH Eli is Ebay seller a.r.collectiblez Ray. Since Ray still breaks a lot of this product, I keep in touch with him in the hopes of rounding out my Murphy wishlist from that set. Well, my harassing paid off when Ray e-mailed me a while ago to say he pulled this card and ask if I needed it. Indeed I did. Big shout-out to Ray for giving me a crack at this before Ebay and not beating me up too bad on the price when he could've. Looks good with these, doesn't it?:
All that's missing is this:
How do I have this scan? I know it's out there. I somehow missed it on Ebay a few years ago when north-of-7 accepted a Best Offer that wasn't from me. When neither buyer nor seller left feedback, my trail went cold. I have no idea what would compel someone who isn't me to buy this card, but whoever they are, I need to find them. That's where I need your help. You don't have to own the card - if you see it, just tell me where I can find it. If I can verify your tip, you will be compensated, plain and simple.
Hope you enjoyed the show. Thanks for the look, and comments always welcome.
Joe
