I sold an item on ebay a couple of weeks ago. 6 days ago, the buyer for one item finally paid me through paypal. Today, I find that he has filed a chargeback complaint that the time has not been received. 6 days after he pays for the item. Of course, there is no tracking number and to top it off, the buyer is now an NRU on ebay. Smells like a scam to me that paypal will do absolutely nothing about but decide in his favour and give him a free $30 card. Sorry, but just had to comment on this. This is why eventually shipping will be $8 on everything because sellers will start requiring insurance on all purchases.
 
I don't know much about pay pal but I have heard about payers being able to pay for stuff but later able to zap it out of the seller's account. I know one of my friends does not send stuff out for pay pal till 30 days. Has anyone else had problems with pay pal for either buyers or sellers? I would be interested to hear positive or negatives to this as I have thought about setting up pay pal on ebay. thanks J
 
The problem is that waiting 30 days will almost guarantee a negative on ebay. Short of requiring the buyer to purchase tracked shipping you are hung out to dry as a seller. This is the first time I have had something like this happen and I have been selling and using paypal for close 4 years.
 
I charged $2.50 for shipping. My actual cost was $1 for stamps, $0.50 for the bubble envelope, and $0.25 for the case and sleeve.
 
true G-Force but you can put in the listing that due to problems on pay pal blah blah I will ship after 30 days...but sounds like a isolated case so need to... Pay Pal does nothing to protect you the seller on this one? That does not seem right to me...
 
paypal wont do anything, what alot of sellers do is charge three bucks, buy bubble mailers in more of a bulk so you dont pay .50 a piece, buy some toploaders in bulk so you supplies will be .20 instead of .75 and insure no matter what.

IF you dont this is becoming a very very common thing and I havent seen any cases resolved in favor of the seller
 
My smoothest batch of auctions that I've ever run required all PayPal sales to add $7.50 for registered shipping. It was either that or don't bid. I was blown away by the number of buyers that were willing to do this, and everyone was very happy when they received their items safely in less than a week. I was worried that that would affect the final auction totals but this was not the case.

I say don't be hesitant to do this with all PayPal funded auction payments. If you don't then you're just setting yourself up for this type of scam.

The saddest part is that it's the sellers that pay the fees but PayPal chooses to protect the buyers. PayPal really ****s.
 
i've been burned on the charge backs....whether valid or not...so to protect myself i always get at least delivery conf and for items over 50$ actual signature conf.

my shipping is generally 5$ but i buy envelopes and whatnot in bulk...and i state in the options that sig conf is mandatory and included in the shipping. i know it comes off as being automatically distrustful of my bidders, but i'd rather be safe. I don't sell as a living, so i'm not worried about getting stuff sold the first time. I've never had to relist an item more than once and can't really say it was specifically because of shipping.

i also no longer ship out of the US as tracking/verification is generally outrageous. i had one buyer in Canada that desprately wanted a couple cards and was willing to pay 20$+ for a tracked USPS GEM package, but that was an exception.
 
I state in my auctions that all purchases over $50 with PayPal must also purchase tracking/registration/whatever. I get the odd person complaining, but for the most part no problem. Of note, canuckelhead won an auction from me yesterday at $40 - and I'm making him pay for registered mail, after Cheez's trouble with him.

Ryan, sounds like you had the right idea - but would I be correct in guessing you were mostly selling high-dollar stuff?
 
For US sellers its a lot easier to get a tracking number or DC as its called. In Canada there is no such option. In order to send an item that comes with confirmation of delivery express post is the only option and it can run you between $8-15 depending on where you ship. If you sell a cards for $10 there is no way you can afford to insure that card if it's going to cost you $8. For Canadian sellers its not an option for small purchases...there is nothing we can do but hope for the best. Does paypal policy on this matter ****? YES and thats why I now only have a basic account that doesnt take Credit cards because paypal will not take any fees on the incoming money. They dont deserve it!
 
Wouldn't you be able to show Paypal that his claim was made ONLY 6 days after his payment was recieved? Surely even Paypal can figure out that 6 days is insufficient time for a package to arrive. I have never had to deal with a chargeback, so I am a bit unfamiliar with it. Doesn't it cost the "buyer" a fee to do this?
 
Reading through these is great...but makes me want to shy away from using pay pal as a option. Keep posting your positive and negatives about pay pal. It is good therapy lol...
