A question for Panini

Hopefully Al or someone from Panini takes a peek at this and can offer up some sort of an answer...


We're now three Panini releases into your inaugural NHL season (four, if we count NHL Stickers), and I have yet to see even a base card of Tomas Kaberle.

In Certified, nothing...considering it competes directly with Artifacts, I wasn't super surprised, as he's usually not in that one.

Score, however, was disappointing not to have a Kaberle card in there...this is probably your most comprehensive set (similar to O-Pee-Chee) so I don't understand why all players wouldn't be included in this set - again, even just a base card!

Now we have Donruss, and again, no Kaberle on the checklist...this is a direct competitor to UD Series 1 and 2 it seems, and he has been in that set for years. Very disappointed again to see him passed over.

I'm curious how you pick all the players in a set...I understand in more limited sets with smaller base counts, you're going to go with the bigger stars that will "sell" the product, but I really think you missed the mark with Score by not including the whole roster. Are you only including players that will sign (as I know TK isn't the best signer, for UD, anyway)? I'm not always asking for autographs and game-used stuff...I do like collecting base and parallels too :)

I'm sure there are some other players that other collectors will chime in with that have not been in your releases to date.

If you could explain a bit on the process you go through when choosing who is and who isn't included in a set, maybe it will help me (and others) understand it better.

I came in on the tail end of Donruss so I don't know for certain but you'd be surpised the amount of work (contracts, etc.) that has to be nailed down before a player can appear in a set.

Really...even for base? I would have thought your license is with the NHLPA/ NHL so you'd have the right to portray any player with such license. Understandably, you'd need a contract with the player, I guess, for autos but it surprises me that each player needs to contract with you and UD for just good ol' base and non-auto'd inserts.

Weird.
 
Like I said, not sure on Donruss but if we don't have an auto contract with a player it's hard to get him in (with all of the auto'd parallels in the sets).

UD just released the O-Pee-Chee checklist. I scanned the base set quickly and didn't see Kaberle listed.

No Kaberle in Score (Panini) or O-Pee-Chee (UD)? There must be more to this than each manufacturer simply deciding not to include him.

Unless he's opted out of Group Licensing Agreement of the PA - he should be in there, unless everyone is waiting for the inevitable trade that keeps being talked about...
 
My question is kind of the opposite of Kevin's, why are there any current Leaf players in sets? I thought you guys only used NHL players :D

Just kidding....sort of. I was also interested in how players are chosen for base sets so it was a good question on Kev's part.
 
I'm also very interested in how the players are selected. P-L L-Leblond is in the set but he won't see the light of day for the devils again. Seems that there where other guys that would've been better choices.

Maybe one of these days... I doubt it is because he won't sign autos.

I can't believe that he would do that, as I find it difficult to image that he could possibly make more on his own than he would receive as a part of the collective deal. Typically that is left to the Barry Bonds' and the Michael Jordans of sports.
