do you think that if things continue in NJ as they are now, Brodeur's reputation will be irreperably tarnished? Not only is the team sucking, but he is as well. Is the real Brodeur coming out now that he doesn't have a stellar defense in front of him? He says he is getting no offensive support, which I will agree with, but you can't count on your offense to score 5 goals a game in order to win, which still wouldn't have won many games in NJ so far this season.

And before anyone attacks me for being a Kovy fan and blaming him, I never wanted him to go to NJ and thought the Devils made a huge mistake signing him. However, he was paid to score and is second on the team in scoring. So while he is not putting up huge numbers like I and the Devils would like, he is doing his part.

Brodeur is getting old. there's no question he isn't as sharp as he was in his prime. that being said, Brodeur in his decline will still be better than some #1 goalies that other teams have.

this is a transition period for the devils. they're gonna go through rough times as they work out the kinks. when its all said and done, Brodeur will still go down in history as arguably one of the greatest goalies to have played the game. anything that happens going forward is just going to be a blip on the radar. nothing's going to take away from his accomplishments.

Brodeur has 2 shutouts this year already, I think he still got it. He has played some good teams and have been shorthanded on players a few games!

I agree with this. The entire team is struggling right now. If Brodeur was single handedly making them look bad it would be one thing, but I don't think the Devils have any bright spots right now other than.... um nobody.

Elias had 1 goal and is a -9
Arnott is a -10 and looks very sloooow
David Clarkson, my favorite Devil, isnt scoring or providing any energy.
Zajac has one goal, but he is the only guy with a positive +/-
Langenbrunner is a -9, with no goals.

The powerplay is terrible, they have 3 PP goals this year.

The biggest problem they have right now is the finger pointing. It is time for someone to step up and lead by example and start making people hold themselves accountable... It probably won't come from the guy with the C on his jersey though...

Not sure why we need another topic about the same thing, but to keep it short:

Every non-devils fan has known for 20 years that Brodeur was not "as good" as his stats indicate. Dont get me wrong, he may very well have been a top 5 or even 3 goalie in the game on a different team. But he owes everything he has to the devils and their style. I said when Clemmesen took over that we would really see if the goalie makes the team, or the other way around. We all know what happened, Clemmy was basically an all star candidate. In all his years, Brodeur never had a long term injury so that we could compare another goalie.

And I said it over the summer, the devils should have gone for Halak.

+1....Roy is far and away the best clutch goaltender in the game. Regular season stats aside, Roy could actually be classified as the most clutch player in NHL postseason history as his 3 Conn Smythes can attest to.

Yes, players like Plante and Dryden won more Cups and more Vezinas than Roy, but look at the teams they had in front of them, same goes for Brodeur. Roy had a bunch of frenchman in front of him for 93 and had 9 other rookies in front of him for the 86 playoffs. He won both of those Cups singlehandedly for the Habs, Brodeur, at no point, ever WON the cup FOR his team.

And Brodeur's on his last legs soon enough....

Yeah, I would have to vote for Roy as well (and I'm a Leafs fan!) How come people are leaving out Hasek though. He may not have had the longevity of Roy and Brodeur, but when he was on the top of his game was there ever a better keeper?

As for the OP, No. It should be obvious that once you hit a certain age you can't perform as well as you used to. Brodeur's legend has already being solidified, there is almost nothing he could do now to tarnish that. However I still think he has a couple of years left in the tank, and I don't think he is the biggest of New Jerseys problems.

Brodeur, at no point, ever WON the cup FOR his team.
Did you ever see any of the games in '95? & a record 7 shutouts in '03 while facing an average of 30 shots per game?Oh no probably did watch any of those game because it was the boring Devils system.

The OP has clearly not looked at ANY stats whatsoever - The goal-tending has not been the best, but consider that of the 36 goals allowed, 13 have come over the course of two blowout losses. Johan Hedberg does not give the Devils an option, as he has been abysmal in the action he has seen so far (.750 SV %) - so that is 23 goals distributed over the other 9 games = 2.55 GAA per game.

That number could be better, but at what point is at least some of the blame going to be placed on the ANEMIC offense? Brodeur has nothing to do with the fact that the Devils have the 30th ranked power play in the NHL.

If you guys hate Marty so much and he is of such poor character due to the rough start that the entire team has had, why isn't my PM box flooding with messages from members worldwide begging me to take their Brodeur cards off their hands lest their collections be sullied as well?

We've got quite a way to go until we can legitimately talk about a sullied reputation. Yeah the past couple years haven't been ideal, but he's still reached the overall wins and shutouts records, no small feats. The playoffs are where things can go sour - another early round exit and people are going to start throwing around the R-word.

Brodeur is one of the best goalies in history no doubt. Stats don't lie. He is getting up there in age and just like all players before him it has to come to an end some time. I think he started to decline a little in the Olympics . Lou had to come in but he wasn't exactly that good either. Don't forget guys the Devils are not the same team they where a few years ago.

In his last three years of playing Sawchuk played 57 games for 3 different teams. Sawchuk won only 17 of those games with only 3 shutouts. No on goes on at length about how much he sucked and how his reputation was soiled. As a player comes down to the end the stats will suffer, but Brodeur's rep is well intact. His career wont be judged by his swan song IMO.

What complete nonsense... Brodeur's career cannot be diminished by 1/10th of any season. He will be recognized as one of the greatest goaltenders of all time. The same could have been said of Roy, Sawchuck, Hall, Vachon, Bower and Esposito.

No idea why you have Roy on that list his last year he had a 35-15 record 2.18 GAA and for the record Roy puts Brodeur in his back pocket with or without the last 3 or 4 years.

I'm thinking the Kovalchuk signing had a lot to do with Brodeurs predictable decline due to age. The Devils need a face after Brodeur is gone. I don't know if Kovalchuk is the answer though.
