Hey folks!
So it's been a while since I last posted a S&T - probably a good two years, if not more! Coming back to Hong Kong made the hobby harder to come by again, even with an online community such as HI. However, I got back into the swing of things about a year ago and I'm happy to say that hopefully I'm here to stay for a while.
First shoutout of the post goes out to Ryan (Johnny Drama). Living out in HK has meant that going for the lower-end stuff just isn't worth the chase anymore - postage almost always costs more than the cards since the US price hikes. However, Ryan quickly stepped up and agreed to be my mail mule and agreed to hold on to many of the cards you see in this post. This S&T simply wouldn't be possible without his help. Thanks Ry!
Miscellaneous Pickups
First up are some 1994-1995 Fleer Ultra Base Parallels. Quick story about these bad boys: like many kids my age, I first got into Hockey due to the Canucks; run to the Cup in '94. Though that run didn't end so well for me, I was full blown into hockey and come the 1994-95 season, I was chasing every hockey card I could get my hands on. For better or worse, 1994-95 Fleer was the first set I collected and along with my brother, we managed to put together the entirety of the base set from Series 1 and Series 2 – quite the feat for a couple of kids back in the day! Naturally when this set came out as an insert in 2012-13 Fleer Retro, I had to have them all.
While I managed to pick up the base set pretty quickly (and in large part thanks to our very own Steve (Quincy)), the Parallel Base Autos have become more of an aspiration rather than an active chase. These five represent all that I have and I will only continue to pick up ones on the cheap.
1994-95 Fleer Ultra Base Parallel Eric STAAL
1994-95 Fleer Ultra Base Parallel Logan COUTURE
1994-95 Fleer Ultra Base Parallel Joe PAVELSKI
1994-95 Fleer Ultra Base Parallel Dion PHANEUF
1994-95 Fleer Ultra Base Parallel Evander KANE
Next up is an old timer that I've been looking to add to my collection for a while. The card speaks for itself and I'm very happy to have finally picked up a Beliveau Auto, with a nice clean signature to boot. I'd eventually like to add the other hockey greats from this set and already have my eyes on a Tony O.
Sportskings Series B Autograph-Memorabilia Jean BELIVEAU
Canucks
On to some more familiar territory – Canucks!
Just some autos that I was glad to pick up for the price they were at. It seems like a set collector was liquidating and had most, if not all the Canucks in the set. Just a shame I missed out on the rest of the gang.
1996-97 BAP Pinnacle Autograph Dana MURZYN
1996-97 BAP Pinnacle Autograph Corey HIRSCH
1996-97 BAP Pinnacle Autograph Dave ROBERTS
These two are part of what I hope to be an eventual family of four and goes against my vow to only collect hard signed autographs; yes, I'm one of 'those' people. The set looked easy enough when it first came out, but I still haven't been able to find a copy of the Linden, and have only seen one Don Lever to date.
ITG Captain-C Base Auto Gold Henrik SEDIN
ITG Captain-C Base Auto Gold Roberto LUONGO
This last one from this section is another one of those that were too cheap to resist. It'll go nicely with the small Kesler PC I have that mainly consists of his rookies.
SPX 2011-12 Winning Materials Auto Parallel Ryan KESLER
Trevor Linden
I've always been a big fan of Linden but never really had the pockets to compete for the biggest cards out there. Between Brett (bamlinden), Kev (kmitchel) and Elliot (echoi69), I doubt I'd have any place to stand! My humble pickups:
Panini Limited Retired Number /49
ITG Decades 80s Base Autograph
UD Trilogy Ice Scripts
Panini Classic Signatures Social Signatures
Panini Playbook Autobiography Auto
Mostly hardsigned, save for the Retired Numbers which I purchased a long, long time ago and the Playbook Autobiogrpahy. The Playbook came as a package with a couple of Frankie Corrados I needed (more on that later). Saved one for last:
UD SP Authentic Base Auto Parallel
Easily the highlight of my Linden collection. Clean, crisp, hardsigned.
Canucks Rookies
A slew of Canucks Rookies now. Save for the Canucks Cup and Spa FW Patches, it'll be a bit tough to pick up any more cards. The reality is that most of the FWs and YGs are cheap and won't be worth the shipping if it's just the odd single. Please do contact me if you see anything you have that I don't, though!
EDIT: I’ll save you all the pain of starring at the YGs.
A couple of random pickups to start things:
2003-04 ITG VIP Ryan KESLER
2006-07 Ultimate Collection Jersey Patch Auto Luc BOURDON /10
2006-07 Hot Prospects Autograph Alexander /100
2007-08 Hot Prospects Patch Auto Jannik Hansen /399
The Luc's nice and I got it for what I remember to be a cut price as well. Unfortunately, it will likely make way to fund other purchases soon.
2012-13 SP Authentic FW Yann SAUVE
2009-10 SP Authentic FW Sergei SHIROKOV
2009-10 SP Authentic FW Michael GRABNER
2007-08 SP Authentic FW Jannik HANSEN
2006-07 SP Authentic FW Luc BOURDON
2006-07 SP Authentic FW Jesse SCHULTZ
2005-06 SP Authentic FW Kevin BIEKSA
Now on to the patch variations - I've actually just added a Hodgson tonight. I'm trying to be rather picky with the patches that I purchase: not the easiest task with the Schultz and Bourdon being 7 years old, already.
2006-07 SP Authentic FW Patch Auto Alexander EDLER
2007-08 SP Authentic FW Patch Auto Jannik HANSEN
2012-13 SP Authentic FW Patch Auto Yann SAUVE
We're getting to the business end of things here, now. Everyone loves their Cup Rookies these days and I'm no different. To give myself a bit of a challenge though, I'm going for the Rainbow variations - the ones numbered to the jersey number of each player only. I haven't been able to be quite as selective as I've wanted to be with these patches. There just aren't that many of them to enable me to do so. Without further ado:
2006-07 The Cup Rainbow Rookie Alexander EDLER /23
2007-08 The Cup Rainbow Rookie Jannik HANSEN /59
2008-09 The Cup Rainbow Rookie Cory SCHNEIDER /35
2009-10 The Cup Rainbow Rookie Sergei SHIROKOV /25
2009-10 The Cup Rainbow Rookie Michael GRABNER /40
2012-13 The Cup Rainbow Rookie Yann SAUVE /47
Corrado
Okay. If you've made it this far, you'll be glad to know that there is more. I was never really actively looking to collect Frank Corrado, but card after card fell into place and before I knew it, I had more and more of his rarer cards without realizing.
The initial intention was just to collect some here and there - I've never been a completionist - but with UD seemingly shelving his cards and him not even getting a Young Gun, I soon realized that a complete collection was the only way to seriously collect him. I have a good feeling that he will be a steady player to come for many years, just in time for the young new wave of Canucks to fill the ranks.
First up is the rainbow from BD. I've omitted the base because it just doesn't shine the way these do. These sure look pretty altogether!
2013-14 Black Diamond Ruby /399, Emerald /25 and Sapphire /5
I was particularly pleased to snap up the Sapphire so quickly. Randy (Orca Pod) will attest to how difficult it can be to find the rarer Black Diamond cards.
Next is a card numbered to the jersey number. If you haven't been able to tell, I have a certain affinity for these cards. Missing from this category is his card from Titanium /26. That is high on my wantlist.
2013-14 SP Game Used Rookie /26
Another few cards here. The highlights are the Prizm Auto and the White Hot Parallel. I'm also thrilled to have picked up a three color Silouhette. I like the idea of a couple rookies together on one card - gives the lesser names a card without having to flood the market.
2013-14 Totally Certified Base Auto
2013-14 Totally Certified Base Parallel Gold /25
2013-14 Playbook Breakout Patch Prime /25
2013-14 Titanium Base Rookie Draft Position Parallel /100
2013-14 Prizm Auto Gold /10
2013-14 Fleer Hot Prospects Base Rookie White Hot Parallel /9
2013-14 Crown Royale Silouhette Jersey Auto /199
This is the last set of photos and is the start of a rainbow. Most people don't like products like Totally Certified for the plethora of parallels. For me, it's the only thing that has kept this chase interesting. While I had some intitial confusion with the parallels and the designation, it is a lot clearer after I scanned the cards - the Mirror versions really shine through.
2013-14 Totally Certified Jersey Auto
2013-14 Totally Certified Jersey Auto Blue Parallel /25
2013-14 Totally Certified Jersey Auto Mirror Blue Parallel /10
2013-14 Totally Certified Tag Auto Green Parallel /5
2013-14 Totally Certified Tag Auto Mirror Green Parallel /1
The highlight for me has to be the 1/1.
Thanks for looking folks! A shameful plug of my wantlist, here. I'd be real grateful for any help along the way.
