Earlier today myself and the crew from Movember Winnipeg headed down to the C4 Comic Convention to do our Facebook Photo contest. It was the first time I've been to a comic con and for anyone that hasn't been to one yet, let me just say that everything that you thought a comic con was absolutely true.
The dealers, the LARPs, the attendees dressed head to toe in elaborate costumes, the whole 9 yards.
The wares for sales weren't dissimilar to what we see at card shows like the Expo. replace cards with comics (well, except Pokemon and Magic), McFarlane Sports Picks with Spawn, STar Wars etc. and Mario Lemieux with artists and you pretty much have the same experience.
Except for the dress-up.
Here's where the two differ greatly. When you go to an Expo, you might throw on a jersey or a ball-cap from your favourite team. In the 10 or so expos I went to and the easily 30 local shows I've been to, I've maybe seen less than a dozen people don any sort of 'equipment' other than the aforementioned tog or cap. Maybe a couple helmets, one or two faces painted, but that's it.
It's a bit of a curiosity - that we idolize our players like a comic fan does say their favourite Anime hero, but we don't go to the lengths of fandom they do. We wouldn't, say, grow a Lanny McDonald moustache or shave a lightning bolt into the side of our head to look like Evander Kane; even the die-hards will more often stop at a jersey.
It's just an observation, but it's a unique thing.
