Verified Trader,
This past Wednesday, Alexander Ovechkin became the only player in NHL history to reach the 900-goal mark. Alexander Ovechkin has been my favorite player since I began following hockey during the 2005-06 season, and many of his rookie cards have become cornerstones of my 2005-06 collection.
Earlier this year, I finally added one of his most coveted rookie cards—one I had pursued for years. Pictured here is my 2005-06 The Cup Limited Logos Alexander Ovechkin, serial numbered 7/50. While I’ve had chances to acquire other copies in the past, this particular one stood out for a few key attributes that made it worth pursuing aggressively.
Patch Quality: The patch features a distinctive four-color section from the Capitals’ shoulder logo, specifically the lower half of the “CA” in CAPITALS, along with the left crossed hockey stick. It’s both intricate and visually striking—and, notably, game-used, as stated on the card’s back, a rarity among his rookie cards.
Autograph Quality: The inaugural Limited Logos set had a production flaw: the glossy finish where the on-card autograph was placed caused many signatures to bubble or flake over time. This copy has one of the most intact and well-preserved autographs I’ve seen.
Grade: High-grade cards from The Cup’s 2005-06 release are notoriously rare. The cards were hand-packed and often showed wear straight out of the pack. To date, the highest PSA grade for an Ovechkin Limited Logos rookie is an 8, with only two copies known. Mine is an SGC 8.5, exceptionally well preserved in every respect. While I don’t collect based on grades alone, the strong grade on this copy is a welcome bonus alongside the patch and autograph.
I believe the magnitude of Ovechkin’s goal-scoring feats won’t be fully appreciated until long after he retires. His career represents an almost unthinkable model of elite consistency. Like Gretzky’s points record, once Ovechkin’s goal record is set, I believe it will stand for generations—if it ever falls at all.
