Anybody read the issue yet? The twist at the end was...interesting. I won't go into any detail until I know some of you have read it, but I will say I'm not thrilled with the result. A bit farfetched in my opinion.

I was planning to go yesterday when it came out but didnt get a chance.

Now today I'm working and theres a foot of snow. Probably going to have to wait until the weekend.

I had heard a little of what might happen.... Im not looking forward to it lol

Stupid. Flat out stupid. There are people who are VERY talented looking for work in the comic book industry and whoever put this idiotic ending together somehow managed to get a job at Marvel. What a disgrace to a classic comic book title.

This is how I feel. The decision to change the status quo is not the issue I have, but the way it was done was stupid.

I don't see a spoiler tag on HI, so I will do this-highlight below to read post:

SPOILER ALERT

I don't have a problem with Peter Parker "dying"(we know that's not permanent), because I do enjoy the Ultimate Spider-Man series with Miles Morales. To me, Spider-Man doesn't HAVE to be Peter. He's the best and my favorite, but he isn't the end all be all to me. The problem I have is that Doctor Octopus is just an awful choice IMO, and the way they made his transition to a "hero" was stupid. He experienced Peter's life through his own eyes and now he's a good person? That's terrible writing. Doc Ock is still an egotist, but suddenly he has some humility from the mind sharing? And the worst part is that people still think he's Peter. How is whatever he plans to do with MJ considered okay?

Just read it and was shaking my head.
Tried to explained it to a friend and they were left shaking their head also.
One more pet-peeve I have with Marvel is their restarting all books at #1 again (you just know at some point in the near future they will be re-numbering their issue where this one left off) and also what the hell was the point of issue 699.1???

Man, I am sooooo glad I dropped ASM after Brand New Day! Whenever I need my Spidey fix, I just re-read some of the classics from the 60's - 80's.

After reading 700, I was left intrigued with whatever SSM has in store for us.

As far as the haters go...I invite you to read Dan Slott's twitter feed. It's full of raging comics nerds. The underlying message is this: the small vocal minority - and it is a minority - doesn't get to dictate what the majority enjoys. The majority does that. And the numbers keep going up.

SPOILER ALERT

'Sides, the current record holder for major characters staying dead is Phoenix at about 7 years. If Parker's dead for longer than a year or two, I'd be hideously surprised.

Vocal minority? Maybe at being vocal, but the numbers of people who bailed from ASM were about 25% (after a similar internet cry went up) after Brand New Day. Also, the sales of ASM aren't going up - it's pretty much plateaued for some time between 55K-60K with only spikes for special issues (Obama, 698, 700 likely). SSM will probably be 100-120K for #1 but down to 55K by issue #3 or 4.

Also, Peter will be back to Peter by the next movie in 2 years - call it 50 issues or so (as I believe SSM is 2 issues per month)

Kevin

Vocal minority. I stand by it. A couple thousand people *****ing online is exactly that. And as long as they keep slapping money down on the counter, Marvel could give a fat rat's rump what they think. They've already said the only thing the company listens to - the ring of the register. As with anything else, "vote with your wallet" applies.

As far as Brand New Day goes, I'm not going to defend that. At all. Gauntlet and Grim Hunt set a pretty high bar, and OMIT/BND failed to get near it - let alone clear it. However, sales for Spidey have been steadily climbing towards issue 700. Again, Marvel doesn't care how many people are unhappy - they're buying.

When you consider that the average Spider-Man comic only sells 55K, those couple thousand people plus those like myself who don't go online to ***** and moan add up to a lot of people not buying.

Look at what happened with Brand New Day, they had a couple thousand people *****ing online - before BND - ASM was selling

ASM 534 113 507
ASM 537 114 796
ASM 540 119 624
ASM 541 108 217
ASM 542 105 678
ASM 543 106 478
ASM 544 146 170
ASM 545 124 406

After BND - and the online *****ing from a vocal minority to that, in 8 months it dropped from similar numbers pre-BND to just over half

ASM 546 127 856
ASM 547 101 132
ASM 548 97 881
ASM 549 101 048
ASM 550 90 817
ASM 551 88 029
ASM 552 89 808
ASM 553 82 624
ASM 554 81 048
ASM 555 86 885
ASM 556 78 442
ASM 557 77 041
...
ASM 573 82 540
ASM 574 69 060
ASM 575 68 904

So here we go - with the run up to 700

Amazing Spider Man 678 54,259
Amazing Spider Man 679 52,557
Amazing Spider Man 679.1 50,618
Amazing Spider Man 680 51,866
Amazing Spider Man 681 52,148
Amazing Spider Man 682 57,148
Amazing Spider Man 683 59,153
Amazing Spider Man 684 57,454
Amazing Spider Man 685 58,117
Amazing Spider Man 686 58,333
Amazing Spider Man 687 62,681
Amazing Spider Man 688 59,490
Amazing Spider Man 689 59,868
Amazing Spider Man 690 58,984
Amazing Spider Man 691 60,768
Amazing Spider Man 692 91,072 (50th anniversary issue)

Amazing Spider-Man (1963) 696 57,945
Amazing Spider-Man (1963) 697 59,878
Amazing Spider-Man (1963) 698 81,350 (this is the issue that was hyped as a must buy by Slott and others)

I'm not sure I'd say that people are slapping their money on the counter for regular issues - 696 and 697 sold number similar to the last 8-9 months with a 10% raise from 10-11 months ago - not sure on what happened there.

Yes, 698 did spike by 20K and I'm guessing 699 and 700 will as well when the numbers come out.

Will it last? No, it never does. Will it hurt average sales over the long run? That's what I expect. I don't see SSM selling over 55K past issue 3 or 4 and I see ASM 750 or 701 or whatever it gets renumbered when he returns to have a spike at that point for a couple of issue, but issue 753 or 704 will be down to 50K or so.

People did vote with their wallet post BND as seen above, and I expect the same result with SSM as well. I'm not sure short term (3-4 issue) spikes for stuff like this are worth it in the long run.

Kevin

Edit - Will try and source the numbers for 693-695. All numbers listed above are from John Mayo / ComicBookPage.com

Garbage.

Marvel and DC have these flagship titles which are rich in characters and history which have huge fan base and are highly collected. They need to get some good writers and artist to continue on with the base thats already laid out for them. Instead they always keep trying these stupid "EVENTS" so they can go for the quick money grab at the cost of the fans and these iconic characters. Why mess with a good thing. GREED!!!!

So, I bought #700 (first issue bought new since 583, though I have several scattered issues bought from overstock sales) and SSM #1. I guess I'm just getting too old for this sh!t. Slott's writing, which at one time I found entertaining, now just reads flat and hackneyed. Was anyone else immediately thinking "Firestorm" at the end? Seen it, read it somewhere else already.

I have no desire to see whatever disgusting thing Ock ends up doing to MJ. Even if the stories get better - and there have been some apparently well-received arcs post-BND - this version of reality is just plain wrong; therefore, the comics have an innate wrongness as well.

Marvel has given up on being Marvel and will go nowhere as long as they fail to recognize what differentiated them in the marketplace - the wonderfully rich continuity that good writers and editors were able to respect and build upon. That has all gone and so are several hundred thousand fans who used to be Keepers of the Flame and Fearless Front Facers. I'm down to one Marvel title now - Daredevil. I'm not sure if anything that happens in the future can fix the plethora of horrible decisions that have been made by Marvel's PTB over the past 5-6 years. They will eventually get to the point where all content is digital, everything is tailored to movies and only one hard copy gets printed a month to retain whatever print rights they have. Gah! >>>slitting wrists<<<

I just got into "The Invincible Hulk" and I think I dig it. They can hire these guys to ruin the iconic titles, I won't buy into it. They seem to be going in a great direction with Hulk. I'll go along for the ride for now.

I bought #700 just to have a copy of it. I lost interest in Spidey awhile ago. But I read this nonsense and was astonished that such a weak storyline was given the go ahead by the powers that be at Marvel to end such a legendary character in comics. Everyone seems to forget that simplicity is the best approach. This nonsense actually made me sick to my stomach reading it..........the best thing they could do now is reissue Peter Parker has Spiderman and make these last few issues a Nightmare of sorts that he has finally awakened from......then hire some writers and get back to business with the one and only Spiderman at the helm......Peter Parker.
