This thread contains a bit of statistical analysis of the 2011-12 rookie class. It's not really about the players themselves -- rather, it's about the cardboard they appeared on.

For the full list of players earning RCs (broken down by team), please see this thread by Jon (numbern9ne). My thanks to Jon for keeping the lists updated, as I used them extensively in putting together this post.

-----------------------------

THE NUMBERS

142 players earned rookie cards during the 2011-12 season.
* 43 carry-over debuts from 2010-11.
* 2 carry-over backup goaltenders from 2010-11.
* 92 new debuts.
* 4 new backup goaltenders.
* 1 retired player (Connie Madigan).

No players earned their only base-set cards in the following six sets with questionable RC eligibility:
Panini Titanium
Panini Luxury Suite
SP Authentic Rookie Extended
UD Artifacts Autographed Rookie Redemptions
Upper Deck Ice
Upper Deck MVP

-----------------------------

ONLY-RCS

Only three players earned just one rookie card during the 2011-12 season.
Chad Rau (Minnesota Wild) -- Pinnacle
Mike Angelidis (Tampa Bay Lightning) -- Pinnacle
Connie Madigan (St. Louis Blues) -- Panini Certified

It is worth noting that both Rau and Angelidis were featured in the SP Authentic Rookie Extended insert set. That makes Connie Madigan the only "rookie" to appear in just one brand.

There are four players with only two legitimate rookie cards.
Warren Peters (Minnesota Wild) -- Pinnacle and Crown Royale
Greg Rallo (Florida Panthers) -- SP Authentic and Pinnacle
Pierre-Cedric Labrie (Tampa Bay Lightning) -- Pinnacle and Crown Royale
Derek Whitmore (Buffalo Sabres) -- Pinnacle and Ultimate Collection

Peters is noteworthy for two reasons. First, he earned his RCs in 2011-12 despite debuting in 2008-09. Second, he appeared only in the update versions of Pinnacle and Crown Royale, meaning his RC-year cards were released in just one product (Panini Rookie Anthology). Labrie can't technically make the same claim, since he was included in the SP Authentic Rookie Extended insert set.

Notes:
1) The following players have only one #/99 RC:
-- Jonathon Blum (Crown Royale)
-- Lance Bouma (Dominion)
-- Brett Bulmer (Panini Luxury Suite)
-- Raphael Diaz (Panini Certified)
-- Ryan Ellis (Crown Royale)
-- Alexei Emelin (Panini Certified)
-- Justin Faulk (Panini Luxury Suite)
-- Matt Frattin (Panini Elite)
-- Peter Holland (Crown Royale)
-- Leland Irving (Ultimate Collection)
-- Marcus Kruger (Crown Royale)
-- Maxime Macenauer (Dominion)
-- Brian Strait (Dominion)
-- Allen York (Panini Certified)
-- Harry Zolnierczyk (Panini Luxury Suite)
2) This is a massive increase in #/99 RCs (155), as compared to the 2010-11 RC crop (67). Obviously, we have Panini to thank for that.
3) 10 of the 12 players in the UD Artifacts Autographed Rookie Redemption set have other #/99 autographed RCs in other products. All but Hartikainen and Frattin are #/99 in UD Ultimate (among other sets). Frattin is #/99 in Panini Elite (not signed), and Hartikainen does not appear on a #/99 RC.
4) 58 players earned cards in the Titanium base set without earning a #/99 RC in any other set: Joakim Andersson, Cam Atkinson, Stu Bickel, Robert Bortuzzo, Marc-Andre Bourdon, Gabriel Bourque, T.J. Brennan, Erik Condra, Stephane Da Costa, Stefan Elliott, Cade Fairchild, Kris Fredheim, Colin Greening, Erik Gustafsson, Teemu Hartikainen, Jimmy Hayes, Mike Hoffman, Ben Holmstrom, Roman Horak, Hugh Jessiman, Roman Josi, Keith Kinkaid, Carl Klingberg, Mikko Koskinen, Tomas Kubalik, Eddie Lack, Anton Lander, Brad Malone, Kevin Marshall, David McIntyre, Brayden McNabb, Andy Miele, John Moore, Mike Murphy, Brendon Nash, Greg Nemisz, Anders Nilsson, Dmitry Orlov, Paul Postma, Zac Rinaldo, Harri Sateri, Yann Sauve, David Savard, Colton Sceviour, Ben Scrivens, Brendan Smith, Carl Sneep, Frederic St. Denis, Bill Sweatt, Cam Talbot, Colten Teubert, Scott Timmins, Corey Tropp, David Ullstrom, Tomas Vincour, Joe Vitale, Slava Voynov, Patrick Wiercioch
5) Three players had base set cards in Score that were supposedly limited to 100 copies: Joe Colborne, Cody Hodgson, and Aaron Palushaj.

Additional analysis, thoughts, or corrections are welcome.

Props to you both! I fell asleep at the wheel and missed Whitmore getting a RC this year. Another couple to track down for my BGSU collection. Thank you!!

very interesting read, I appreciate that.

I looked to my henrique spread sheet and found that he has the following

Panini Release's - 144 different cards including 1/1's and para-hells
U.D Release's - 93 different cards including 1/1's and para-hells (does not include plate from the cup)

that's 237 different pieces in total.

WOW

Excellent analysis :beer:

Makes me wonder though, do we really need that many rookie cards of a single player in one season? I can't see anything but the highest-end RC's holding any significant value 20 or 30 years down the road since so many are pumped out between both licensed companies. Obviously having more options means more collectors of different budgets can get a decent RC since not everybody can afford the big Cup cards so that's a good thing I guess.

This analysis will be great to look back on down the road if those players with fewer RC's end up being superstars. It may be smart to pick up a few of those lone #/99 RC's and hope for the best :)

Man I love this sort of stuff. I am a self professed stats nerd , well done my man!
