Another CUP Fake Patch??? Looks fishy to me....

Saw this on eBay and thought WOW!!! What a Patch!!! But as I looked at it closer, it looked out of place....

Here is a scan of the card in question:

Somehow, this patch just doesn't look right. Seems like the letters in Minnesota are too small for the actual shoulder patch (and I should know what that patch is like). There are other differences, too.

Here is my card to compare the letter sizes....

I used their scan (scan 1)

I made my card scan the same size (scan 2)

Their letters on the eBay patch are A LOT smaller. Plus the gold trim that borders the letters is thicker on my card. And the scan itself is blurred and distorted a bit.

Is it just me...or does this scream "Fake Patch" ??????? The SELLER has good feedback, but maybe they bought it from someone not knowing the patch is fake. ??? Maybe the scan itself is just doctored and the patch isn't even like that ...just made nicer by the Seller to get a higher sale. Then when the buyer gets it, the patch is different, but the SELLER will remove the scan from eBay so there is no proof. ???


I see they sold it just recently for a BEST OFFER of $200....hope the buyer isn't screwed over....

More proof this is a fake...

Here is an actual Wild shoulder patch. Using a ruler to measure the diagonal area from the top of the first "N" to the top of the "L" in WILD (what is shown on the patch) is approximately 2 1/2 inches.

Regular trading cards are 3 1/2 inches x 2 1/2 inches. Using that 2 1/2 inch patch measurement on a regular card and placing it diagonally, would take up almost the whole card.

The patch size on a Limited Logos card is big, but not that big. This Gaborik Cup card in question is shown with either a fake patch, or a fake image of a patch on it.

Another point of comparison, although I think you do pretty much say the same thing is that the spacing between the letters in the shoulder patch, and the card patch is quite different. Have there been more condensed forms of the patch before?

I have never seen one. Unless Upper Deck is using a fake Gaborik patch for this card (not authentic). ???????

I'm leaning towards a fake and it being a photo shopped fake at that. Very convincing arguement for it being a fake Curt, nice job. I feel sorry if the buyer receives a different patch all together once it does arrive . What a sad state the hobby is in for this kind of stuff to keep happening. -Mike

Edit- Check out this sellers current auctions and past auctions and tell me what you think of the amount of multicolored swatches he's manged to sell. Especially the Phaneuf Limited Logos card he has up now. Hoooolllly!!

Funny thing, i was tracking a buyer from limited logo`s from Ontario, he was buying all the 1 colour and cheesy 2 colours out there, and even buying team patch on the same account ! I only keep a few in scan cuz i dont collect them or have time to track them alll but im just waiting for them to come out, the thing is a recpectable seller can grad them at show`s or shop`s near buy so you never know if the owner has actually switch the swatch, but this low feedback ebayer sure semms to have some beyond unique patch.

Definitely a nice spot. I'm glad there are people in this hobby that look out for one another!

'DRKICKER' makes a good point though. Spotting the fake is one thing, but determining where it came from is another. A perfectly honest dealer could've picked it up from a scumbag, and when the perfectly honest seller sells the phony patch, it makes them look bad/guilty.

Maybe someone could email the seller to see where he got it from?

That caught my eye right away last night. The first thing I noticed was the letters don't look nearly as bright white. The size was the next red flag. Too lazy to resize, but here's mine that I bought from Mark the Logo Master:

I don't know what's worse; if that was doctored on the secondary market, or UD using a patch that's not real accidentally. Either way, it sucks.

The serial number 41/50 on both of those cards.

I have been talking to a guy who recently bought my Gaborik card from me and told him not buy that one because the Gaborik mafia suspected it was fake patch. I had 2 of them and I kept the best one that is pictured in this thread. Needless to say I sold him my Gaborik patch and the rest was history.

Good eye Curt for saying something. I have been told they have contacted the buyer and the seller through ebay. Keep an eye out for that kind of crap everyone.

I have contacted the BUYER (I told him yesterday, but he doesn't want to believe it...he will now). Hope he hasn't paid yet. Contacting eBay, too.

Message: Seller ID: kkma_88 is trying to sell item 220223936343 with a fake patch. The real card was sold on March 5 under auction: 350030856671 (Seller ID: boomer-man). Notice the card is the same serial number (41/50) and the autographs match exactly. I knew the patch looked odd, as I am a Minnesota Wild trading card collector. I just don't want the BUYER to get shafted on this fake card. Thank you.
