Another Vicious Hit From The Blind Side

Just happened a few minutes ago, so the video will probably be on youtube in a couple hours. Jeff Carter comes back checking hard from behind and puts a shoulder into the head of Anssi Selmela. Catches him from the blind side just like the Mike Richards hit on David Booth. They believe Salmela was out before he hit the ice, which was even worse as he slammed face first into the ice and was out for quite some time before being taken out on a stretcher. No penalty called, Salmela had scored on the play and not even sure if the refs saw the hit. I know they have talked about these hits many times at the GM meetings, when are they finally going to start suspending these guys for extended periods for targeted hits to the head which cause injury? It's just sick to watch players being injured with these types of hits that have no place in the game.
 
the flyers are scumbags plain and simple but when the sabres played em tough they cried like little girls he should get 5 games for that and on other boards flyer fans are relishing in it sad
 
Just saw it. I figure Carter will get 5 games for it, and rightfully so.
And this is coming from a pretty big Jeff Carter fan.

I'm a flyers fan and a Carter fan but that was not even close to an open ice hit. That was flooring a guy after he scored.

The flyers fans on the other boards may be "relishing in it" but there was not much noise in the crowd afterwards.

very true they were very respectable
 
I dont think it was dirty, very similar to the Richards hit, his elbow was up after the fact, the problem with it is that it was a blind side hit, which isnt a penalty, but it needs to be changed in the off season
 
Richards did something like this that week when they played the wild. The wild player had 2 steps on him going back to touch the puck for iceing and Richards slammed his stick into the wild players skate and he went feet first into the boards. And no penalty was call. This is getting out of control

To be fair, your elbow doesn't just jerk up in the air after a shoulder collision. The only reason his elbow was up like that was because his arm was already on the upswing.

I don't blame Philly fans for cheering the hit at the moment of impact. It's hard to judge a hit like that as dirty at the spur of the moment from where you're sitting. It would be much more obvious if, say, the hit was from behind to the head. I can't believe I'm defending Philly fans, but after they booed the hell out of Snooki at Wing Bowl, I feel like I owe them one in gratitude.
 
The only sad thing about this is that none of the Devils went over and smoked Cater when he scored...

Oh wait, Motteau and White (HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA) were on, and the Devils have the heart of a plastic bag, and the intensity of honey garlic wings, sauce on the side.
 
After seeing the hit, I agree with Matt that Carter will probably get 2 games at most (if the league even decides to do anything).
 
I do agree that these blind side hits need to be eliminated. However, I don't agree with anyone who says this is an illegal hit NOW. It is NOT a late hit after the goal was scored, as you can clearly see in the video Matt provided a full second doesn't even tick off in slow motion so imagine how quick that happens at full speed. I also don't think it is an elbow, his arm come up after the contact was made. I am not a flyers fan, nor do I like/dislike Jeff Carter but I don't think his intentions were to remove salmela's head from his body. Therefore, as the rules stand now I don't think he deserves a suspension.
 
Talking about bad karma... Carter scored with few seconds left in second to tied the game at 2...

As about the hit. I saw hit live. VS show it about 20 times while Salmela was out. At first it looks vicious, but seeing it under several angles make me realized that the only bad thing Carter did was to it Salmela on the blind side (the Flyers player hit the Devils player's jaw with is shoulder). Those blind hits are not illegal now. But they certainly should be in the future.

Im with you word for word.

Wasn't really a dirty hit except the fact it was from the blindside.
 
I didnt see the hit yet, but am wondering at what point does the nhl start fining the GM's for these hits?

You want to stop them? Make the big boys responsible directly. There is clearly a discipline issue in philadelphia, as there has always been. At what point is the coaching and management responsible?
 
So let me get this straight - its not dirty, except for the fact that its dirty - OK, that seems to make sense.

Its a hit to the head and no, there aren't hit to the head penalties but there are a number of penalties that can and should be called in blind high contact. In this instance, Carter could have prevented a goal if he would have gone in at the body hard but he clearly skated away from the mass of the player and at the head.

Meatball - these have to be done away with - in my opinion, the NHL better hold a meeting with all officials during the olympic break and tell them to start calling this stuff - shoot call and unsportsmanlike penalty for every intentional hit to they head, and yes, I trust the officials to make the judgement calls.
 
IT was not a dirty hit at all. The guy was coming back into the middle, what was Carter supposed to do just let him skate into the middle at will? He hit with his shoulder, he aims for the guys shoulder and catches his shoulder and then his head, he kept his elbow down, and the hit was well under a full second from when he shot the puck. What else was he supposed to do? Listen to yourselves people.

Umm the devils player was pretty low to the ice, and Carter never left his feet or jumped. So how was this an intentional high hit to the head?
