Any guesses on a sealed tin of 2005-06 The Cup?

Personally I'd never buy high end old wax like this. Probably searched. Even if it's not, the odds of getting anything good at that price point is so rare.

Can chime in with experience here from 30+ cases ripped of 2005-06 Cup. Opened a few cases more recently over the past few years too.

- case hit had a grey piece of foam on the top

- case hits ranged from a Joe Thornton Emblems of Endorsement sticker auto patch #/15 ($50-$100 card depending on patch)...

- there were 6 tin cases (always bought those since they were "guaranteed" case hits; there were times with foam at top and NO case hit too... ) and 3 tin cases (which I didn't buy, but have heard many Dual Shield #1/1's out there and not sure about #/99 ARP - don't know if those had foam too layer for case hit as well)

- obviously with 5 tins up on PWCC, someone has most likely weighed each box to find the lightest box containing the case hit (i.e. pack/tin search; lightest tin will have least cards because foam is lighter than card). This pack searching became common place a few years after 05-06 Cup release. If you buy these tins live on eBay now (there's magically 5 tins so high chance the 6th was kept and opened for case hit), KNOW they will 99.9% NOT contain a Crosby/Ovy Maybe worth buying to keep away or grade (can you even grade a tin?!),... but to open for a lottery ticket is a sadly foolish endeavor in a rigged game. Buyer beware.
- check for RE-SEALED case of loose tins and also check the shrink wrap on the tins. There were many tins seen where the shrink wrap was not completely stretched out and never hit anything from those tins.
- between some other friends and I, we have broken over 100 cases of 05-06 Cup. We did document this at one point on everything to look out for, but that's in some past archive of posts now. some things are unforgettable.
The highlight of the Toronto Expo that year was standing next to you by the Upper Deck booth, Stephen, and watching you FINALLY pull a Crosby RPA! :D

I too bought a few tins of 06-07 with loose shrink wrap and HORRIBLE hits. Didn't know much about searching etc when i bought them or else I would of returned them.

Would there not be a higher upside selling spots for these particular tins instead of selling them outright? Seems like the most logical way to get full value while buyers can sort of mitigate risk.

I think if I was rich enough to aford a crosby Cup RC id buy the whitest or blackest patch i could find.... Thats about the only way to be confident it's not fake... Unless it was from this site or the like with expertise people have here.

Curt! I was about to faint being so tired at that Expo and you kept me from falling! Haha. I think I broke a case of 06-07 SPA the evening before and was trying to wheel and deal to make an 05-06 Cup set from scratch. Great memories.

You did have the best spot in the house. It was really neat to find an 05-06 Cup case at the Expo, break it spontaneously at UD's booth, have a growing crowd and the roar of pulling he 2clr Crosby ARP #/99 was epic! Like a scene out of a movie.

One of my favorite all time hobby memories. Hope you are keeping well my friend! :D

Didn't the tins containing the Crosby and Ovechkin RPA /99 have a foam insert in the tin instead of an additional hit? Any pack with those cards in it would be a good 40 grams lighter if someone were to weigh the tins. Just sayin...

That's exactly what started happening. Pack searching at its worst. Open sealed 6 tin case, pick lightest tin and sell the other 5. Sad, but never buy loose tins. Odds are very well stacked against you.

05-06 cup tins

Hi fellows. I have read all your comments on the tins for sale on PWCC. One note on the archives of ovechkin and Crosby arp’s that Matt and Jeremy put together is there are still many cards that were not in the archives because collectors pulling these did not send in the information. So it’s incomplete. I know collectors that pulled Crosby’s and put them away that no one will ever know that #/99. But at least we have something which is better than nothing. I agree with Steve on Crosby 10. No one in their right mind will crack it to try and put a 3 color patch in its place. I know of one other bgs 10 being graded and that is a 3 color kostitsyn, I know this as I was the one that sent it away
To get graded. Lol.
One other thought for you fellows stating that Beckett and psa are very good at not grading trimmed or altered cards. Well I disagree with that. My proof is the last 2 Crosby 3 colors on eBay were graded 8.5’s. One the owner of the card mentioned it was altered in his auction. The other was in a probstein auction which I had to notify them to change their auction because that Crosby was luckily in the archives as a one color. So please don’t think if a card is graded that you are safe, you aren’t!! The fake patchers are idiots but some are good at their craft. I wish we could put them in a cell. I absolutely hate it.
I hope this some of you fellow collectors
My 2 cents is I would never buy 5 tins. It is true guys were weighing the tins then selling.
Take care guys and gals and stay safe and healthy randy

Those were Def searched. Yes foam packs weigh less. I hit an OVE #/99 from a three tin case.
I ripped a ton of these cases too. tin/ box were 2-3-4 autos and 2 base.
I think i am still waiting on a few redemption's from UD. Yeah i'm stubborn.
