Any Hockey Referee's?

After reading a thread about hits to the head in the League Discussion section, it led me to wonder how many board members are actually hockey referees.

I personally have been refereeing for 6 years and over the years have worked my way up to being a level 3. It has taught me how to deal with conflicts and how to address curtain situations properly.

So, are you a referee?

James, thats a real accomplishment to get your three that quickly. Well done! There are so many opportunities in Ontario to officiate vs BC where I am. I was back there in London for 4 years and it was some fantastic hockey. I had all sorts of instruction and evaluation and all the games I could handle. I really enjoyed my time back there. Great times. I have officiated for 28 years, since I was 12. I currently hold my level 3. I have reffed mainly for BC hockey, but also for the BCJHL, OHL and OHF. Currently Im the RIC for my local minor hockey association in Summerland BC. Givin back to the kids and staying fit. :)

I was. But then marriage, kids and work got in the way.
That, and the handful of surgeries required to repair these old knees.

I'm sure we all have our "war stories" about hockey parents... I should write a book about it one of these days...
 
wow sounds really fun being a ref to bad i live in cali and cant skate.... but as a ref do you think you make some bad calls after they have been called? not sure if this is:offtopic: but every sport has its moments with refs and coaches

You have to have the conviction to stand behind the call you made based on what you saw in that instant. Replays might show that you should have made a different call, but as long as you interpret the rule(s) correctly based on what you saw, that's all you can do.

The bigger problem is that 99.999% of parents need to realize that their kid(s) will never be much more than beer-league players. Back in Ottawa, a neighbour used to call their 12 year old "the million dollar kid" because an OHL scout was there one day. Turns out that I was a linesman that day... poor kid could hardly skate worth a lick.

The biggest problem in minor hockey is NOT the referees - it's the delusional parents who only see what they want to see.
