Any insight on what happens to un-redeemed cards of high production cards?

We all know the feeling of pulling a many years old redemption of a card that is out in the market but no longer redeemable. I am curious about what companies, lets use UD for example, do with the hundreds of FWAs or CUP RPA /249 and /99. Surely not all of them make their way to the redemption raffle, especially the really high value rookies?

And what of the un-redeemed Artifacts numbered and auto'd rookies?

Do some cards get destroyed, kept for "Buybacks" etc... Curious to see if anyone has any insider insight into this?

But isn't their argument about lack of long term storage to justify the need for expiration? If not destroyed, I don't see how they would hand out all of their high value cards as replacements or via raffle, take Pastrnak Cup ARP redemptions for example from 14/15. I would love if they did like panini and redeem at any point pending product availability.

If it is a storage problem, having redemptions available in perpetuity means they have to plan to be able to store them theoretically forever. If they put a limit on the date and once that is past avail themselves of the option to dispose of them in any way they see fit, the storage issue becomes much more manageable.

My personal opinion - there's nothing wrong with having an expiration date... what I wish was more readily available is what cards are actually redemptions so that you can make a better informed decision prior to buying a dated box.

Once the cards expire and depending on their importance, I see these cards as part of replacement package, future buyback products or listed as Updated cards in similar products. The initial cards, prior to expiry date would be honored and the balance, UD can do whatever!
 
Perhaps used in the expired redemption raffle?

I’ve never had a high end expired redemption in the raffle to know for sure.
 
I would expect that anything that wasn't redeemed before expiry (or was replaced already) gets used as a replacement......

They make 999 copies of a Future Watch. They don't get them back in time, so they pack out 400 redemptions. 350 of these get keyed in, 50 are still sitting in unopened boxes.

Two years later, they get the cards back. 150 of the 350 have long ago given up, and taken replacements..... so 200 FWAs get mailed out.

Set builders go nuts, and these cards end up selling for WAY more than they would have, had they been in packs.

UD is now sitting on 799 reasonably high valued replacement cards.... and they only have to hold back a limited supply of them for another year.... while waiting for the redemption to expire.
 
A little off topic, does anyone know what happens if you scratch off the code on an expired redemption and get denied . Is it eligible for the redemption raffle?

Yup. They want the redemption cards physically out of the marketplace, hence the current raffle procedure.
 
Replacements and more recently buybacks. I see a few FWA autos that were redemptions in this year buybacks.

I wish the expiry date was a minimum 5 years instead of the standard 2.
