Is it a rule in most hockey that you can't throw a stick from the bench ala Crosby in the Canada-Czech game today. I thought it was, but I was surprised that Miller-McGuire didn't know. Any opinions, or even a definitive answer?

I didn't see the Canada-Czech game, but this is from the NHL.com rules:

Rule 88(c): A misconduct or game misconduct penalty, at the discretion of the Referee, shall be imposed on a player who throws his stick or any part thereof outside the playing area. If the offense is committed in protest of an Official's decision, a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct plus a game misconduct penalty shall be assessed to the offending player.

That's the closest thing I could find to it, however that is NHL rules and they may be different for the tournament.

I'm pretty sure it is a penalty.

I'm also 99% sure that if a defensemen (or any player on the ice, but for discussion's sake) loses their stick, if a player on the ice (IE a forward) is going to give them their stick, the must HAND it off, they cannot TOSS it to them, or it's a penalty.

That is the most interesting penalty I've ever heard of since a guy playing against one of my teammates got kicked out and given a gross misconduct for grabbing her butt.

Hahaha, both penalties are pretty funny. I was a ref for 2 years and I know that it is a penalty, although I didnt ref hockey at that high a level. I dont have the book with me at the moment... its in my ref bag which is packed away in my basement somewhere. But I would guess that it would be a bench minor... I wouldnt go as far as a game misconduct though.

I think it could be a 10 minute misconduct if you throw in down on the ice after a call, but not just for tossing it to a player.

I think USA Hockey Rules state that if a stick is thrown from the bench to a player on the ice it's a minor penalty. I don't know about these International rules though. Like if the puck hits the goalie's mask play is stopped. Where the heck did that come from? They don't even do that in Mite's.
